  • Publication number: 20060051281
Abstract: A metal carbide composition and a process for synthesizing metal carbides, through a single step process, wherein oxides of different metals, including, but not limited to Si, Ti, W, Hf, Zr, V, Cr, Ta, B, Nb, Al, Mn, Ni, Fe, Co, and Mo were physically mixed with spherical or filamentateous nano structured carbon, and inductively heated to a certain temperature range (900-1900° C.) where the metal oxide reacts with carbon to form different metal carbides. The process retains the original morphology of the starting carbon precursor in the resultant metal carbides. This method also produces highly crystalline metal nano-carbides. The metal carbide products would have applications in high temperature thermoelectric devices, quantum wells, optoelectronic devices, semi-conductors, body armour, vehicle armour, catalysts, and as discontinuous reinforced agents in metal such as aluminum and other alloys.

  • Publication number: 20050063892
Abstract: An electro thermal fluidized bed furnace is adapted to be used in a process for continuously heat treating of fine particulate matter, such as carbon black material, by continuously introducing a non-reactive fluidizing gas through the nozzles of the furnace at a pre-determined rate, continuously introducing untreated carbon black material through the feed pipe of the furnace at a predetermined rate so that it forms a fluidized bed, energizing the electrode so as to heat the fluidized bed, and continuously collecting the treated carbon black from the discharge pipe. The carbon black collected from the discharge pipe exhibits properties of having the PAHs and sulfur removed, the carbon black has been graphitized, the moisture pick-up by the carbon black has been eliminated and the carbon black is more oxidation resistant, Furthermore, the resultant furnace carbon backs have a particle size of 7-100 nm and an oil absorption number of 50-300 ml/100 g.

  • Publication number: 20020165302
Abstract: Improved carbon black and method for producing improved carbon black by combining one or more additives with carbon black in the absence of a solvent or carrier resulting in an additive carbon black (ACB). The additive may include p-phenylenediamine (PPD) and related compounds. The invention also relates to improved polymer compositions and articles of-manufacture comprised of the improved carbon black and methods for making same. Advantages provided by the improved carbon blacks made in accordance with the invention may include reduced processing time for polymer, such as rubber, compositions and articles, as well as reduced cost and environmental impact from the production of the improved carbon blacks themselves.

  • Publication number: 20020004127
Abstract: The present invention relates to a fire resistant material and, in particular a fire resistant panel for use on vessels such as ships where lightweight materials are required. The fire resistant material includes a matrix or basalt mineral fibers and glass fibers. Each of the types of fibers are substantially uniformly distributed throughout the material, preferably, a panel. The relative size of the basalt fibers and glass fibers is such that the glass fibers are smaller than the basalt fibers and are interspersed between the basalt fibers in the matrix. A method for the production of a fire resistant composite material according to the invention is also described.

  • Patent number: 6330984
Abstract: The present invention is directed towards an improved method for delivering a continuous strip material to a spool upon which it is to be wound. The method includes the step of reducing the effective width of the continuous strip material prior to its being wound on the spool by shaping the strip material into an arcuate cross-section. The shaping means is rotatable about an axis parallel with the axis of the spool. The method includes moving the shaping means axis of rotation while winding the strip material on the spool and maintaining the shaping means axis of rotation parallel with the spool.
