  • Patent number: 4315848
Abstract: 2-[2-Hydroxy-3,5-di-(.alpha.,.alpha.-dimethylbenzyl)phenyl]-2H-benzotriazol e exhibits outstanding efficacy in protecting organic substrates from light induced deterioration as well as good resistance to loss by volatilization or exudation during the high temperature processing of stabilized compositions. The combination of the benzotriazole UV absorber with a hindered amine light stabilizer is particularly efficacious in protecting thermoset and thermoplastic acrylic resin automotive finishes and enamels.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 1, 1980
Date of Patent: February 16, 1982
    Assignee: Ciba-Geigy Corporation
Inventors: Martin Dexter, Roland A. E. Winter

  • Patent number: 4275004
Abstract: Substituted 2-nitro-2'hydroxyazobenzenes are prepared by adding an aqueous mineral acid solution of a diazotized o-nitroaniline to a strongly alkaline lower alkanol or aqueous lower alkanol solution of a substituted phenol, containing sufficient alkali metal hydroxide to assure a pH value substantially over 11 and an excess of hydroxyl ion in the reaction mixture even after all the acidic diazonium salt solution is added, wherein the reaction solvent mixture is at least 50% by weight of lower alkanol, at a reaction temperature between -15.degree. C. and +30.degree. C.The o-nitroazobenzenes obtained are intermediate products useful in the manufacture of benzotriazole UV absorbers.

  • Patent number: 4105646
Abstract: This invention provides compositions containing thermally stable prepolymers with azadiene end groups, and compositions containing such prepolymers in combination with dienophiles and the chain-extended and cross-linked polymers obtained from these systems. The combination of such prepolymers with dienophiles facilitates processing of the prepolymer resin by lowering the softening and curing temperatures under processing conditions.
    Type: Grant

  • Patent number: 4105630
Abstract: 2-Oxo-2-alkoxy-5-dialkylphosphono-1,2-oxaphos-pholanes of the formula ##STR1## in which R.sub.1 to R.sub.7 are hydrocarbon radicals can be prepared from .alpha., .beta.-unsaturated ketones and 2 or more moles of a dialkyl phosphite. Obviously .beta.-ketophosphonates are intermediates of this reaction as these compounds react with 1 or more moles of dialkyl phosphite in yielding the oxaphospholanes too. Both reactions are promoted by alkaline catalysts. The new oxaphospholane derivatives are considerably stable against thermal decomposition. They can be used as flame retardants in epoxy resins.

Obviously .gamma.-ketophosphonates are intermediates of this reaction as these compounds react with 1 or more moles of dialkyl phosphite in yielding the oxaphospholanes too. Both reactions are promoted by alkaline catalysts. The new oxaphospholane derivatives are considerably stable against thermal decomposition. They can be used as flame retardants in epoxy resins.
