  • Patent number: 6070530
Abstract: A method and an apparatus for cleaning a rotating cylinder of a rotary printing machine. The apparatus having a washing device, including a washing brush, roller, or cloth, which can be engaged and disengaged from the rotating cylinder to be cleaned. The washing brush roller or cloth can be sprayed with a cleaning fluid (detergent, water) as well as both water. The method and apparatus ensure a controlled guiding of the detergent onto the outer surface of the rotating cylinder, which guarantees an effective cleaning and, at the end of the washing operation, leaves a relatively dry outer surface of the rotating cylinder. The cleaning method is intended to be suitable, in particular, for detergents having a biological base, for example, esters of vegetable oil.

  • Patent number: 5609105
Abstract: A sheet-conveying drum for use between units in a printing machine is provided with a plurality of gripper bridges arranged substantially circumferentially symmetrically on the drum surface. The gripper bridges hold the paper to the drum and include gripper impact strips that are adjustable radially relative to the drum in order to accommodate printing materials of different thickness. Each gripper impact strip is adjusted by means of a positioning device that is arranged on the drum radially inward of the gripper impact strip and mounted so that it can move axially relative to the drum and cam the gripper impact strip radially. The axial movement of each positioning device is brought about by an actuating device which is preferably a pneumatic cylinder and is disposed on the body of the drum at the free end of each positioning device. An energy supply sequentially actuates each actuating device resulting in the piston of each cylinder either extending or retracting.

  • Patent number: 5272975
Abstract: A throw-on and throw-off device for a blanket cylinder in the printing unit of an offset press is provided wherein two parallel double-acting fluid pressure cylinders connected to the blanket cylinder via a toggle-like linkage can be individually supplied with compressed air either consecutively or simultaneously so that, in the first case, precise sequential throw-on of the blanket cylinder on the plate cylinder and subsequently on the impression cylinder can be achieved and, in the latter case, there can be a very rapid throw-off of the blanket cylinder from both the impression cylinder and the plate cylinder. Compressed air energization of the two pressure cylinders is triggered by a control unit in accordance with the position of grip edge zones of the blanket, plate and impression cylinders being in registration.

  • Patent number: 5189957
Abstract: A sheet-conveying drum for skew register correction in multicolor printing that does not affect the drive in sheet-fed rotary presses. The sheet-conveying drum comprises gripper bars and support or carrying webs that are disposed on a drum shaft. The web disposed nearest the drive input has on its flange an arcuate bearing surface around which the drum body can be skewed relatively to the drum shaft. The web disposed opposite the drive input is coupled to an adjusting eccentric bushing by way of a flange to cause the drum to skew. The movements of drum skewing do not adversely affect the drive and, therefore, the transmission ratios of the sheet-guiding cylinders relative to one another.

  • Patent number: 5167187
Abstract: A throw-on and throw-off device for a blanket cylinder in the printing unit of an offset press is provided wherein the blanket cylinder is mounted at both its ends in eccentric bushings and the pivoting throw-on/throw-off movement of the bushings is produced by a toggle-like linkage. Two parallel double-acting fluid pressure cylinders are connected by way of their piston rods to a cross link which is pivoted to one of the links of the toggle linkage. The two pressure cylinders can be individually supplied with compressed air either consecutively or simultaneously so that, in the first case, precise sequential throw-on of the blanket cylinder on the plate cylinder and subsequently on the impression cylinder can be achieved and, in the latter case, there can be a very rapid throw-off of the blanket cylinder from both the impression cylinder and the plate cylinder.

  • Patent number: 5117703
Abstract: A radially adjustable gearwheel for driving a cylinder of an offset press. The gear rim has three axially disposed tapered bores into which axially tapered bolts can be pressed to act radially on the gear rim. Additional axial bores are provided between the tapered bores to form expansion webs in the gear rim. The tapered bolts, in conjunction with the expansion webs, subject the gear rim to varying radial deformation in a gently rising parabolic curve depending on the tension applied to the tapered bolts so that the deformed gearwheel rolls with minimal impact and shock forces.

The printing machine includes inking rollers supported on cam rollers which bear on cam discs situated axially parallel to the plate cylinder inside an arcuate housing. The cam discs are interconnected in such manner that they can be adjusted individually and they are also connected to the housing so as to be adjustable jointly. The housing is also pivotally connected to an adjustment drive by means of which it can be moved peripherally relative to the plate cylinder bearing to effectuate the engagement and disengagement position of the inking rollers.

  • Patent number: 5081925
Abstract: A selective drive for a metering roller in a damping unit of an offset printing press which enables the metering roller to be driven by the damping fluid fountain roller without peripheral slip during the joint washing of the damping unit and inking unit. The gearwheel drive producing the peripheral slip can be selectively brought into and out of operation by the meshing of two intermediate gears being interrupted and restored by a lever which carries the metering roller and one intermediate gear being pivoted by an actuating cylinder around the axis of the damping unit fountain or ductor roller.

  • Patent number: 4960053
Abstract: A vibrator control is arranged to produce a brief pause or interruption in the movement of a vibrator roller before the vibrator alternately engages with an ink ductor and with a distributing roller wherein the arms of a pair of rocking levers which journal the vibrator roller at both ends are each operatively connected to an oscillating forked lever on alternate sides by means of opposed adjusting screws which cause the rocking levers to bear against one of two resilient abutments disposed opposite one another on the press frame. The adjusting acrews are adjusted so that a gap is alternatiely created between each of them and the rocking lever as the forked lever moves to the center of its oscillating stroke.

  • Patent number: 4852488
Abstract: A sheet transfer drum for a recto and verso printing press having a two-piece section device, each piece being mounted on a diagonal slide, the slides being angled in opposite directions, so that the two pieces hold the two corners of the trailing edge of the sheet and stretch the corners in opposite axial directions as well as the circumferential direction of the sheet transfer drum. The stretching of the sheet is synchronized to the rotation of the transfer drum and effected by a control cam cooperating with a cam fixed to the printing press frame. The suction of the suction device is synchronized to rotation of the transfer drum by a commuting air connection between the suction device and a source of suction external to the press frame. The suction device is also adjustably mounted to the shaft of the transfer drum so that sheets of various length may be stretched.
