  • Patent number: 7610895
Abstract: In a method of operating an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle during an engine warm-up phase, the engine having a cylinder including a piston defining in the cylinder a combustion chamber, wherein fuel is injected into the combustion chamber in a pilot injection, a main injection and, selectively, a post-injection, and during the heat-up phase of the engine, the center position of the combustion is retarded relative to a center position of the combustion in the normal engine operating mode in order to more rapidly heat the engine and the coolant in the engine cooling circuit for rapid heating of the passenger compartment of the motor vehicle.

  • Publication number: 20080066724
Abstract: In a method of operating an internal combustion engine with a cylinder including a piston defining in the cylinder a combustion chamber, in particular a diesel internal combustion engine, with multiple direct fuel injections, the engine having a coolant circuit and an exhaust gas recirculation device, the fuel is injected into the combustion chamber in a pilot injection, a main injection and selectively a post-injection, while the internal combustion engine is operated in a heat-up phase as a function of the engine coolant temperature. During the heat-up phase, the center position of the combustion is retarded relative to a center position of the combustion in the normal engine operating mode, and in order to increase the heat transfer to the coolant circuit, the pilot injection is carried out in the form of at least two partial quantities, with the injection of the entire fuel quantity taking place in such a way that the center position of the combustion during the heat-up phase is after top dead center.

  • Patent number: 7267084
Abstract: In a cooling and heating device for an internal combustion engine having a main coolant pump supplying coolant to the engine and a coolant return line with a return flow control unit which directs the coolant return flow to the main coolant pump selectively via a large cooling circuit, in which an air/fluid cooler is arranged, or via a small cooling circuit bypassing the air/fluid cooler, an oil/coolant heat exchanger is provided for heating or cooling a flow of oil, the flow of coolant through the oil/coolant heat exchanger being controlled by means of a coolant flow control unit directing the flow through the oil/coolant heat exchanger only after a predefined coolant temperature has been reached so that, below this temperature, no heat is extracted from the coolant by the oil/coolant heat exchanger and rapid heating of the internal combustion engine is ensured.

  • Patent number: 7128026
Abstract: In a method for controlling the heat in an internal combustion engine for a vehicle with a coolant circuit and actuable devices for influencing the heat balance of the internal combustion engine, wherein a coolant temperature and further operating parameters of the internal combustion engine are recorded, the actuable devices are operated as a function of the coolant temperature and the further operating parameters of the internal combustion engine in such a manner that an output value for determining a control variable is provided by means of a basic characteristic diagram as a function of the rotational speed and the load on the internal combustion engine, and this control value is corrected by means of a controller as a function of the coolant temperature and/or the further operating parameters.

  • Patent number: 5345762
Abstract: The invention relates to an exhaust gas conduit of an internal combustion engine with a starting catalyser which is arranged near the engine and in whose casing a central passage surrounded by a catalyser body is provided. The central passage is controllable by means of an exhaust gas butterfly valve in such a way that the exhaust gas flows through the catalyser body when the butterfly valve is closed and is led through the central passage when the butterfly valve is open. In order to prevent overheating of the starting catalyser after the main catalyser starts, a pipe section of the exhaust gas conduit is provided which starts from an inlet flow end casing section, protrudes into the central passage so as to form an annular passage and ends at an upstream distance from the exhaust gas butterfly valve.
