Abstract: A method of measuring and compensating the effects of stray light in a spectrometer and use of the method to improve linearity and accuracy in the spectrometer. Light from a broadband light source (100) is blocked in a particular band of wavelengths by an optical filter (104) and light outside the particular band of wavelengths is transmitted by the filter. A spectral measurement within the particular band measures aggregate offset, including the effects of stray light, dark current and electronic offset. In absorption spectrometry, a first spectral measurement within the particular band is measured with a chemical sample not present and a second measurement is made with a chemical sample present. The first spectral measurement is used for compensation of a reference spectrum and the second spectral measurement is used for compensation of a sample spectrum, each within the particular band.

Abstract: A light-stable cosmetic composition for protection from UV rays having a wavelength of between 280 and 400 nm, which contains at least one tetraalkylquercetin in a cosmetically acceptable oil-based medium, and new tetraalkylquercetins.

Abstract: The invention relates to the use of .alpha.-hydroxyketoalkyl derivatives as light protection filters for cosmetic or pharmaceutical products, the .alpha.-hydroxyketoalkyl group being linked, if appropriate via a spacer, to a chromophoric group which has an absorption maximum in a wavelength range of between 280 and 400 nm and has a conjugated .pi.-electron system of at least 8 .pi.-electrons, and to new .alpha.-hydroxyalkyl derivatives, processes for their preparation and pharmaceutical and cosmetic formulations comprising these derivatives as light protection substances.

Abstract: The invention relates to the use of benzimidazole derivatives of the formula I, ##STR1## where R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4 and Ar have the meaning given in claim 1, as light protection filters in cosmetic formulations, at least one of the radicals R.sup.1 to R.sup.4 or an alkyl or alkoxy substituent of the group Ar containing at least 4 C atoms.

Abstract: A device installed on a traveling wire EDM apparatus for straightening the electrode wire and providing the electrode wire with a needle point end for facilitating manual threading of the electrode wire through close tolerance closed wire guide members. The device takes the form of a pair of spaced-apart current conductive metallic studs, a heat shield being located at some intermediate portion between the metallic studs. The metallic studs are connected across a source of electrical power. A length of wire proximate its end is held manually over the metallic studs, with an intermediate portion of the wire disposed within the heat shield, and a pull is manually exerted on the wire beyond the metallic studs while the wire is being heated by electrical current flow through the wire between the two metallic studs. The wire is heat-straightened and ruptures at its portion within the heat shield, with sharp needle point ends being formed at the point of rupture.
