  • Patent number: 11622281
Abstract: A user equipment (UE) includes a first communication component configured to use a first frequency band, such as ultra-wide band (UWB), and a second communication component configured to use an intermediate frequency (IF) band that overlaps with the UWB band, such as an IF millimeter wave (mmWave) band. The second communication component conducts an IF signal along an internal signal conduction line that may interfere with UWB processing. A processor of the UE is configured to detect an indication of such interference, and, in response to the indication of interference, control the second communication component to adjust a characteristic of the IF band signal to mitigate the interference, such as by reducing its signal strength. The amount by which the IF band signal strength is reduced may be controlled to achieve a desired tradeoff between various performance metrics, such as power consumption and quality of service.

  • Patent number: 7620029
Abstract: This disclosure is directed to cell acquisition techniques for telecommunication systems that implement FDMA and TDMA techniques, such as GSM systems. The techniques make efficient use of processing time in order to accelerate the cell acquisition process. Upon acquiring synchronization information of a first cell of an FDMA system, the timing for the acquisition of cell identification (ID) information associated with the first cell can be scheduled based on the synchronization information of the first cell. Synchronization information of a second cell of the FDMA system can then be acquired prior to acquiring the cell ID information associated with the first cell. Moreover, synchronization information of a additional cells may similarly be acquired prior to acquiring the cell ID information associated with the first cell. In this manner, efficient use of processing time can be achieved between the acquisition of synchronization information and the acquisition of cell ID information.

  • Patent number: 7477896
Abstract: Techniques are provided for reducing the likelihood of missed pages during cell reselection. For cell reselection with early camping, a terminal determines that reselection from a first base station to a second base station is required. The terminal then performs cell reselection and receives sufficient system information to process a paging channel for the second base station. The terminal starts monitoring the paging channel upon receiving this information and prior to completing the cell reselection. For cell reselection with reconfirmation, the terminal receives and decodes a control channel for the second base station prior to performing cell reselection. For cell reselection with overlapping page reception, the terminal monitors the paging channel for the first base station until a terminating event occurs and starts monitoring the paging channel for the second base station upon receiving sufficient system information. The monitoring of the two paging channels overlaps in time.

  • Patent number: 7444150
Abstract: Upon power on, a terminal performs cell selection, finds the most suitable cell to receive communication service, and camps on this cell (the serving cell). The terminal thereafter performs “C2-based” cell reselection if a better cell is found, “non-C2 based” cell reselection if the current serving cell cannot be camped on, “power scan” cell reselection if the C2-based or non-C2 based cell reselection fails, and cell selection if the power scan cell reselection fails. For the power scan cell reselection, the terminal initially performs a power scan and obtains received signal strength measurements for a list of RF channels. This list includes fewer than all RF channels evaluated by the cell selection. The terminal then acquires and decodes the N strongest RF channels, preferably in parallel, to find a suitable cell. The terminal selects a suitable cell, if found, with the highest C2 value as the new serving cell from which to receive service.

  • Publication number: 20080215573
Abstract: Techniques for inter-frequency neighbor list searching are disclosed. Embodiments disclosed herein address the need for inter-frequency neighbor list searching. In one embodiment, a searcher is deployed to search a PN space with a first set of search parameters and to return search results. A subset of those results is selected, along with a previously saved search result, to form a set of PN locations for a second search. The second search is performed on a window around each of the PN locations, using a second set of search parameters. The maximum peak from the second search is saved for use in future iterations. In one embodiment, the subset is selected as the highest energy level peaks from the first search. In one embodiment, if a maximum peak is deemed to correspond to a valid base station when the position of that maximum peak is within a pre-determined time offset from a previous maximum peak.

  • Patent number: 7383049
Abstract: In a wireless telecommunication network, hybrid (GPS and AFLT) mobile stations provide redundant position information, which is used for time base calibration and/or correction of position measurements. Every mobile station (i.e., handset or cellular phone) can be used as a test instrument, and data from regular wireless phone calls can be supplemented by data from drive-around field test units. The time base and/or position offsets are stored in a base station almanac data base along with other information used for obtaining the most reliable position fixes under a variety of conditions. An automatic system is provided for creating, updating, and maintaining the base station almanac data base. The automatic system not only characterizes the performance of the wireless network but also characterizes the performance of the position determination system. The automatic system provides performance feedback to system operators and customers.

  • Publication number: 20080089310
Abstract: This disclosure is directed to power estimation techniques for use by a subscriber unit of a frequency division multiple access (FDMA) system during the cell selection process. The power estimation techniques recognize that adjacent cells, i.e., adjacent in terms of frequency, often have slight overlap. Thus, the power from a signal associated with one cell can cause power to be detected in an adjacent cell, even if no signal is actually present in the adjacent cell. In accordance with this disclosure, techniques are described for identifying, reducing or eliminating the detection of false positives in such adjacent cells. By identifying, reducing or eliminating the detection of false positives, the cell selection process can be accelerated and additional processing of false positive signals in such adjacent cells can be avoided.

  • Publication number: 20080014935
Abstract: Techniques are provided for performing early decoding of a message on a control channel in a wireless (e.g., GSM) communication system. In a GSM system, a message for a paging channel is transmitted in four bursts. For early decoding in GSM, a terminal initially receives the first two bursts for the message. The two bursts are processed and decoded to recover the message, which is then checked to determine whether it has been decoded correctly or in error. The decoding process can terminate and the terminal may go to sleep early if the recovered message is good. Otherwise, the third burst is received, and all three bursts are processed and decoded to recover the message. Again, the decoding process can terminate if the recovered message is good. Otherwise, the fourth burst is received, and all four bursts are processed and decoded to recover the message.

  • Patent number: 7263349
Abstract: The velocity of a wireless communications device (WCD) is estimated. In response to this estimated velocity, a tracking speed of a filter is determined that corresponds to the estimated velocity. The filter filters a timing error signal to produce a control signal that controls the timing of a synchronization clock. This synchronization clock may be a finger clock that controls the timing of a pseudonoise (PN) sequence generator configured for despreading a pilot symbol sequence.

  • Patent number: 7127663
Abstract: A system and method for bad frame indication of a speech frame includes estimating a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and checking a cyclic redundancy code (CRC) value of the speech frame. When the speech frame fails CRC error detection or the SNR is below a pre-specified value, a bad frame indication (BFI) flag is set. When the speech frame passes CRC error detection and the SNR is above the pre-specified value, a receive signal quality metric of the speech frame is checked against a high threshold and, if need be, a low threshold. The BFI flag and the receive signal quality metric for the previous speech frame is checked when the current receive signal quality metric is between the high and low thresholds. The BFI flag is set according to the value of the SNR, the CRC value, the current and previous receive signal quality metrics, and the previous BFI flag.

  • Patent number: 7095813
Abstract: A system and method to reduce-the effects of TOA errors. A mobile unit, generates a correlation pulse when a signal transmitted from a base station is detected. The transmitted signal may be reflected or defracted such that multipath signals arrive at the mobile unit, leading to distortion in the generated correlation pulse and errors in accurate TOA measurements. The system models the response function and calculates the width of the pulse using the modeling function with a dynamically adjustable factor to indicate at what point down from the peak the pulse width will be calculated. Based on calculation of pulse width, a type of multipath signal may be determined and an appropriate correction factor applied to the measured TOA to provide a more accurate TOA determination. The system may apply correction factors to TOA signals from base stations in a mobile telephone unit or from signals received from GPS satellites.
