  • Patent number: 10047710
Abstract: A method of refurbishing a fuel injector body valve seat. The method includes removing a poppet valve from the valve bore guide, machining the bore and valve seat to remove cavitation, machining to create an undercut a the stress riser, nitriding the valve bore guide and radiusing fuel passage to a sufficient depth to restore hardness thereto.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 7, 2007
Date of Patent: August 14, 2018
    Assignee: DETROIT DIESEL CORPORATION
Inventors: Roman F. Kosiorek, Terrance G. Cunningham
  • Publication number: 20150314414
Abstract: A tool and apparatus to refurbish a valve seat having a compound geometry, such as a valve seat in a valve body for a common rail fuel injector is disclosed. The tool includes a body with a head portion having substantially the same geometry as the valve seat to be refurbished. The tool further includes a radiused portion located between two angled surfaces of the tool that functions to provide a chamfered cut at the intersection of the valve seat and diffuser passage to be refurbished. The apparatus includes a collet to secure the tool, and the collet may be mounted or secured to a fixture which is in turn mounted on a preloaded biased base so movement of the tool in the Z axis is controllable. The apparatus also comprises a slide moveable in an X and Y axis for adjustment of the tool.

The tool includes a body with a head portion having substantially the same geometry as the valve seat to be refurbished, the tool further including a radiused portion between two angles of the valve seat to provide a chamfered surface on the valve seat to be refurbished. The method includes lapping the valve seat with the tool in and X, Y and Z axis to refurbish the valve seat in a single operation without substantially altering the geometry of the valve, and the apparatus includes slide moveable in an X and Y axis, and a fixture mounted on a preloaded biased base so movement in the Z axis is controllable.
