Abstract: Tunneling systems and methods or making and using such systems for implanting biological devices, especially catheters, are described. The tunneling system of the invention contains flexible connection tunnelers that contain multiple connection features that are of dissimilar lengths. When used for a multiple lumen catheter, the connection features are easier to separate and are easier to connect with the lumens of the catheter that are in different positions relative to the tunneler. Thus, the tunneling system contains a non-destructive connection between the catheter tip and the tunneler, as well as allowing for greater control during placement of the catheter.

Abstract: Catheters and their uses for vascular access to a patient are described. The catheter comprises an arterial lumen and a venous lumen which run along the shaft of the catheter for most of the length. Near the catheter tip, the two lumens can twist around the longitudinal axis of the catheter. The catheter shaft has two openings, one where the arterial lumen begins the twist and another about 180 degrees into the twist. The catheter shaft also contains an opening for the venous lumen near the nose of the catheter shaft. The orientation of the arterial lumen opening on opposite sides of the shaft eliminates the possibility of side port occlusions since the catheter can't be pressed against a vessel wall that blocks both suction openings simultaneously. And using these openings at each point reduces the chance of occlusion due to blood clots and fibrin sheaths. Other embodiments are described.

Abstract: A catheter for high pressure applications may contain a rigid inner hub, forming a high pressure connection between a fluid path of a catheter shaft and extension tube assembly. The catheter may also contain a soft pliable outer hub with flexible suture wings positioned over the rigid inner hub. When used clinically, the catheter may function as both a standard catheter and a high-pressure catheter.
