  • Patent number: 5080780
Abstract: The invention relates to a new and improved apparatus for removing suspended matter from liquid. The apparatus has a single cell vertical cylindrical hydraulic flotation vessel which is provided with a separation wall to separate a lower gasification chamber from a middle degasification chamber and an upper gas chamber. A number of alternative arrangements are provided for controlling skim collection through controlling volume of liquid within the vessel and changing the volume of liquid through the use of adjustable timer which intermittently send signals to outlet valves of the skim collection outlet or of the treated liquid outlet. The invention provides for alternative arrangement of introducing liquid into the vessel, so as to achieve more intimate mixing of gas and liquid introduced into the vessel.
    Type: Grant

Date of Patent: January 14, 1992
    Assignee: Process Development Company
Inventors: Anthony S. Canzoneri, Ronald A. Boze

  • Patent number: 4986903
Abstract: The invention relates to an apparatus for removal of suspended matter from a liquid, such as used for treatment of oil containing water. A cylindrical horizontal vessel is divided into a single gasification chamber and a single degasification chamber by a partition which extends through the interior chamber of the vessel and allows fluid communication between the two chambers. A liquid to be treated is introduced through distribution header(s) adjacent a bottom of the vessel and/or an alternative inlet nozzle which is combined with a gas eductor in order to achieve a more intimate mixture of the gas and liquid. The gas eductor has its outlet slightly above the outlet of the distribution headers.

  • Patent number: 4943379
Abstract: An apparatus and process of filtering fluids, such as white water is provided for use in the place of an existing save-all device or downstream of an existing save-all device at a paper-making mill. The white water having contaminants in a suspended state is introduced into the filtration vessel and is withdrawn from the interior of the filter element positioned within the filtration vessel. To clean the filter element from the cake which has built up on the exterior surface of the filter element, a backflushing shock is applied to the interior of the filter element, forcing all cake settled on the exterior to be dislodged, thereby cleaning the filter element. The backflushing shock is delivered from a backflushing reservoir wherein the backflushing fluid is contained under pressure at a level at least slightly above the level of a pressure differential which has built up across the filter element. The shock is applied for a period of 1-2 seconds, during which time the backflush reservoir is emptied.

  • Patent number: 4704210
Abstract: Apparatus is provided to allow a relatively high pressure differential to build up across the filter element and layer of filter media in a filter aid filtration vessel.A process and apparatus are provided for reusing filter media in a filter aid filtration system.A process and apparatus are provided for drying filter cake in a filtration vessel to facilitate its disposal. Pressurized gas is used to assist in blowing the filter cake off of the filter elements.A process and apparatus are provided for draining the heel of a filter aid filtration vessel as filtrate.

  • Patent number: 4668405
Abstract: A method and apparatus for backflushing downflow filters is disclosed which comprises providing a closed container having contiguous, vertically adjacent filter layers. A layer of gravel is provided below the filter layers and is separated from the bottom filter layer by a foraminous gravel retention member. Fluid under pressure is introduced through a plurality of fluid nozzles into the gravel layer to backflush the filter layers. Backflush fluid in introduced at a sufficient flow rate to fluidize all of the filter layers to segregate them in accordance with their specific densities and particle size. Introducing the backflush fluid into a gravel layer through a plurality of nozzles helps prevent development of localized areas of high fluid velocity that can cause intermingling of the filter layers during backflush.

  • Patent number: 4330401
Abstract: A continuous clarification apparatus provides a vessel having a bottom portion and a preferably cylindrical and upwardly extending sidewall defining therewithin a liquid retaining space at least partially filled with a "floc" carrier forming a moving media bed with flow normally being downwardly through the bed. A clear water discharge outlet allows the discharge of clarified effluent from the vessel. An inlet header allows the addition of an influent to be clarified into the vessel. A vertically extending inner separation wall generally concentric with the vessel sidewall defines a moving bed area and an annulus area. The annulus area provides a lower scour zone, a middle return zone and an uppermost reject zone. The floc carrier is placed within the moving bed area and an aeration means is placed within the vessel annulus with the air being bubbled upwardly in the annulus during continuous cleansing.
