  • Patent number: 7223376
Abstract: A method and apparatus for the carbonization of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) precursor fibers. The apparatus comprises a furnace, or series of furnaces in side-by-side arrangement. Each furnace includes a heater, an air inlet and an air diffusion plate. The fiber is located in the furnace above the air diffuser plate, such that heated air is evenly dispersed over the fibers. The method generally comprises the steps of heat treating the PAN precursor in an oxidizing environment to stabilize the fiber, and then further heat treating the stabilized fiber in an oxidizing environment to carbonize the stabilized fiber. The method can be carried out in a single furnace, or can be carried out in a series of furnaces in a continuous process.

  • Patent number: 7182859
Abstract: An apparatus for treating organic waste. The apparatus includes a tank having an interior chamber. A weir having a lower opening is disposed in the tank and this weir divides the tank into an inlet chamber and an outlet chamber. The inlet chamber receives organic waste and an outlet discharges liquid to a waste disposal system from the outlet chamber. Microbes capable of biodegrading organic waste are introduced into the inlet chamber. A pump recirculates liquid from the bottom of the inlet chamber to the top of the inlet chamber.

  • Patent number: 5920386
Abstract: An apparatus and method for aiming a vehicle headlight to a standard image pattern includes a frame movable relative to the vehicle. A housing carried on a vertically adjustable housing includes a lens focusing a headlight beam onto a reflective screen which reflects the beam image to a camera. A control compares the digitized image output from the camera with a standard image pattern and generates a correlation factor based on the difference between the reflected image and a standard image. Based on the difference, the control generates output signals to an adjustment device engagable with the headlight mounting frame to adjust the position of the mounting frame to reduce the difference to zero.

  • Patent number: 5890298
Abstract: An apparatus for longitudinally centering the front and rear pairs of vehicle wheels includes a frame having pairs of laterally movable tables, each for receiving one of the vehicle wheels. Pusher members are engageable with each vehicle wheel. A centering mechanism is connected to the pusher members and normally biases the pusher members laterally outward such that laterally inward movement of one of the pusher members due to engagement with an off center vehicle will be resisted by the centering apparatus which will in turn urge the pusher members laterally outward moving the vehicle wheels and the tables laterally outward to a longitudinally centered position. Preferably separate pairs of tables, pusher members and a centering mechanism are provided for each of the front and rear pairs of vehicle wheels.

  • Patent number: 5212621
Abstract: A control station for a machine is equipped with capacitive proximity sensors in two locations for sensing the presence of operator's hands at the locations. The sensors are enclosed in a protective housing behind exterior target surfaces forming exterior wall surfaces of the enclosure and are supplied by a voltage source. A relay in series with each sensor and the voltage source is actuated when the operators hands are both sensed. Each sensor generates an electrical field extending outwardly a predetermined distance forwardly beyond each target surface for sensing an operators hands which are outside the enclosure within the field and need not be in tactile contact with the target surfaces. Only when both hands are sensed do the relays indicate operation of the machine.
