  • Patent number: 8001485
Abstract: A communications device provides a user with a sensory cue that informs the user of certain characteristics of a subsequent action that includes data communications. By informing the user of the data communication characteristics before the user initiates the data communication action, the invention appropriately sets user expectations regarding the data communication characteristics. For example, one embodiment of the invention is implemented in a portable communications device with a screen. For subsequent actions that include wireless communications, the portable communications device simultaneously displays a wireless link icon sensory cue next to a user interface graphic element. The user interface element is used to initiate the subsequent action. The user interface element can be an operating system object having an embedded link type icon.

  • Patent number: 7941389
Abstract: An hierarchical temporal memory network having at least one node configured to receive at least two variables of different properties. The at least two variables have different data types, different data sizes, or represent different physical or logical properties in the hierarchical temporal memory network. By using the node receiving variables of different properties, the hierarchical temporal memory network can be configured more flexibly and efficiently because a separate node is not needed to receive, process, and output variables of different properties.

  • Patent number: 7904412
Abstract: A hierarchy of computing modules is configured to learn a cause of input data sensed over space and time, and is further configured to determine a cause of novel sensed input data dependent on the learned cause. Further, the hierarchy has a first level of computing modules and a second level of at least one computing module, where at least one of the computing modules in the first level operates on a first server, and where the at least one computing module in the second level operates on a second server. The hierarchy also includes a message manager module configured to relay information between the first server and the second server.

  • Patent number: 6757862
Abstract: A method for generating an error correction code (ECC) for a sequence of data units. A first lookup table has first mask words representing a correspondence between each possible data unit sequence position and bit modifications for the ECC. A second lookup table is provided having second mask words representing a correspondence between each possible data unit value and bit modifications for the ECC. For each data unit, the ECC is modified utilizing the first and second lookup tables. The parity of the data unit is determined and, if the parity of the given data unit is of a first value, a first mask word is obtained from the first lookup table corresponding to the given data unit sequence position, and used to modify the ECC. The ECC is modified using a second mask word obtained from the second lookup table.

  • Patent number: 6567549
Abstract: To efficiently recognize characters from several character sets, a palmtop computer system is disclosed wherein more that one character input area is displayed. Each character input area is designed to recognize strokes that represent characters from a different character set. In one embodiment, the palmtop computer system has an alphabetic input area and a numeral input area. In such an embodiment, strokes entered in the alphabetic input area are interpreted as alphabetic characters and strokes entered in the numeral input area are interpreted as numerals.

  • Patent number: 6457134
Abstract: Embodiments of the invention provide for operating a handheld computer with multiple time-out periods in a manner that is more efficient and effective for conserving power than previous systems. In an embodiment, the handheld computer implements one or more additional time-out periods by identifying an occurrence of an event that requires the handheld computer to be in the high power state to perform a specific function. An event may include a function such as sounding an alarm, although other events are also encompassed by embodiments of this invention. When an event is identified, the power state of the handheld computer prior to identifying the event is recalled. The handheld computer then implements a time-out period based on its previous power state. In one embodiment, if the handheld computer was in a low-power state prior to the event occurring, the time-out period is shortened.

  • Patent number: 6397259
Abstract: A wireless communications system, apparatus and methods provide packet minimized communications between a wireless client and a proxy server. The methods use novel data compression techniques to enable wireless communications devices to complete transactions by exchanging a minimum number of data packets. In many circumstances a transaction comprises a single request packet from the wireless client to the proxy server and a single response packet from the proxy server to the wireless client. The methods use a compact markup language, a compact transport protocol, a reliable message layer, hyperlink indices, server dependent forms, and a compressed user datagram protocol header. A compressed request message comprises a base document uniform resource locator followed by compressed data. The compressed data comprises field values and field indices corresponding to fields in a hyperlink document, and an indication of use of a hyperlink document.

  • Patent number: 6253326
Abstract: A communications system and methods for securely transmitting a message between a wireless client and a proxy server are provided. A method for transmitting a message from the wireless client to a proxy server is provided. The message includes at least one packet of data and is encrypted using a data encryption key. The data encryption key is encrypted using a proxy server public key prior to sending the encrypted data encryption key to the proxy server. A method for transmitting a message from the proxy server to the wireless client is also provided. The proxy server recovers the data encryption key using the proxy server private key corresponding to the proxy server public key. The proxy server encrypts the message using the data encryption key and transmits the encrypted message to the wireless client. A communications system for secure communications comprising a source of data, a proxy server and a wireless client is also provided.
