Patent number: 7029564Abstract: In a dielectrophoretic cell having an array of electrodes and means to apply electrical signals to the electrodes. The electrodes include a planar array of serpentine or zig-zag electrodes with their curvatures in register. The serpentine electrodes may be sinusoidal, half sinusoidal, or elongated “C” in shape. The positions of maximum curvature of each serpentine or zig-zag electrode may be arranged in linear alignment, or along a curve. The cell may be used for stationary or traveling wave dielectrophoresis. Particles traveling in opposite directions in traveling wave dielectrophoresis can do so without interference, allowing “traffic control”. Particles can be characterized and separated, and particles at high concentrations, or particles of different types, can be handled.Type: GrantFiled: July 20, 2000Date of Patent: April 18, 2006Assignee: University of Wales, BangorInventors: Gary Lock, Ronald Pethig

Patent number: 6936151Abstract: In a method of manipulating particles suspended in a liquid medium, a moving standing wave ultrasonic vibration and an electrical field capable of generating a dielectrophoretic force on the particles are applied. The ultrasonic vibration may be applied to move the particles from a first suspending liquid to a second suspending liquid, or to move the particles into proximity with electrodes to apply the dielectrophoretic force, or to move the particles into the center of the liquid medium. Alternatively, the ultrasonic vibration and the electrical field may be applied simultaneously.Type: GrantFiled: July 20, 2000Date of Patent: August 30, 2005Assignee: University of Wales, BangorInventors: Gary Lock, Ronald Pethig, Gerardus Hendricus Markx

Patent number: 6264815Abstract: The behavior of particles is tested by placing a suspension of the particles in a chamber in which an electrode array is arranged to generate a spectrum of different frequency dielectrophoretic fields. The behavior of the particles at the different frequencies can be studied in a convenient and rapid manner. The apparatus and method can be used for a variety of purposes, including characterising the properties of specified particle types, or analysing the particle population in a fluid. It is also possible to expose the particles to different fluid parameters to extend the test spectrum in other senses.Type: GrantFiled: January 26, 1999Date of Patent: July 24, 2001Assignee: BTG International LimitedInventors: Ronald Pethig, Gerardus Hendricus Markx

Patent number: 5993631Abstract: Particles are subjected to travelling wave field migration (TWFM) to migrate the particles over an array of microelectrodes. Altered particles are produced by treating original particles in such a way so as to alter their TWFM characteristics and the altered TWFM characteristics are employed for analysis and/or separation of the altered particles. The particles may be cells, bacteria, viruses, biomolecules or plastics microspheres. They may be altered by binding to a ligand such as a metal microparticle via a selective linking moiety such as an antibody/antigen or oligonucleic acid, or be physical or chemical treatments.Type: GrantFiled: July 8, 1997Date of Patent: November 30, 1999Assignee: Scientific Generics LimitedInventors: Adrian Parton, Ying Huang, Xiao-Bo Wang, Ronald Pethig, Alastair R. Patent number: 5814200Abstract: The invention relates to a separator, which is particularly useful for separating cellular matter. The separator utilizes the phenomenon known as dielectrophoresis (DEP).A DEP force effects a particle suspended in a medium. The particle experiences a force in an alternating electric field. The force is proportional to, amongst other things, the electrical properties of the supporting medium and the particle and the frequency of the electric field. The separator, of the present invention, comprises a chamber (10) and a plurality of electrodes (12) disposed in the chamber (10).An electric field established across electrodes subjects some of the particles to a stronger force than others such that they are confined within the chamber. Particles which are not confined are removed from the chamber by the supporting medium which is preferably urged through the chamber. Valves (101 and 202) are provided on exhausts of the chamber. The invention is able to separate two different particles continuously.Type: GrantFiled: September 26, 1995Date of Patent: September 29, 1998Assignee: British Technology Group LimitedInventors: Ronald Pethig, Gerardus Hendricus Markx
