Patent number: 7500699Abstract: A coupling for joining pipe segments together is disclosed. The coupling is derived from a standard fitting and has a housing with a socket and a first expanded region adjacent to the socket and a second expanded region adjacent to the first expanded region. A sealing member is positioned in the first expanded region, a retainer is positioned in the second expanded region and a support washer having transversely oriented radial and coaxial flanges is positioned adjacent to the retainer. A clamping tab turned inwardly on the second expanded region overlaps the radial flange and clamps the support washer and retainer against a shoulder within the second expanded region thereby also capturing the sealing member within the coupling. The retainer has a plurality of radial teeth angularly oriented to engage a pipe and prevent its removal from the coupling. The teeth are twisted about their longitudinal axes.Type: GrantFiled: November 19, 2002Date of Patent: March 10, 2009Assignee: Victaulic CompanyInventors: Ronald R. Snyder, Sr., Charles E. Wilk, Jr., Lawrence W. Thau, Jr., Douglas R. Dole, Terrance M. Carom

Patent number: 7121593Abstract: A coupling for joining pipe segments together is disclosed. The coupling is derived from a standard fitting and has a housing with a socket and a first expanded region adjacent to the socket, a second expanded region adjacent to the first expanded region and a third expanded region adjacent to the second. A sealing member is positioned in the first expanded region, a retainer is positioned in the second expanded region and a support washer having transversely oriented radial and coaxial flanges is positioned adjacent to the retainer in the third expanded region. A lip turned inwardly on the second expanded region overlaps the radial flange and captures the support washer, retainer and sealing member within the coupling. The retainer has a plurality of radial teeth angularly oriented to engage a pipe and prevent its removal from the coupling.Type: GrantFiled: November 19, 2002Date of Patent: October 17, 2006Assignee: Victaulic CompanyInventors: Ronald R. Patent number: 6993848Abstract: A pipe preparation device is disclosed for chamfering pipe ends and placing witness marks thereon to provide a visible indication that the pipes are properly engaged with a coupling. The device includes a body having co-axially aligned receptacles at opposite ends, the receptacles being sized to receive pipes having different diameters from one another. Cutting blades are mounted on the body and project into each receptacle. The blades have cutting edges that engage the end of a pipe inserted into a receptacle and cut a chamfer when the body is rotated relatively to the pipe. Two scoring tools project into each receptacle. The tools have contact surfaces that engage a pipe inserted into the receptacle. The tools in each receptacle are offset from one another and form two circumferential grooves around the pipe when the body and pipe are rotated relatively to each other. The grooves act as witness marks.Type: GrantFiled: May 19, 2004Date of Patent: February 7, 2006Assignee: Victaulic CompanyInventors: Ronald R. Snyder, Sr., Douglas R. Dole

Patent number: 6935152Abstract: An apparatus and method for forming grooves in a pipe for receiving mechanical pipe clamps are disclosed. The apparatus includes a holding fixture for securing the pipe and a carriage rotatably mounted on the holding fixture. Two arms are pivotably mounted on the carriage and extend on opposite sides of the pipe. Each arm has a grooving roller rotatably mounted thereon. An actuator connects the arms and forces the grooving rollers into engagement with the pipe. The carriage, arms, actuator and grooving rollers are rotated about the pipe in an orbit to form the circumferential groove. The method steps include forcing the grooving roller into the surface of the pipe at a fixed rate per revolution of the grooving rollers about the pipe in the orbit.Type: GrantFiled: April 15, 2003Date of Patent: August 30, 2005Assignee: Victaulic Company of AmericaInventors: Douglas R. Dole, Ronald R. Snyder, Sr.

Patent number: 6918278Abstract: A tool for preparing pipes for coupling using mechanical couplings is disclosed. The tool has a movable roller pivotally attached to a body, a tapered roller rotatably attached to the body and a plurality of tool rollers rotatably mounted on a carriage slidable within the body. Each tool roller has a chamfering flange, a grooving flange and a textured, surface for chamfering the pipe end, forming a groove in the pipe end and marking the pipe end. The carriage is movable to position a tool roller at a predetermined distance from the pipe centerline. The tapered roller and the movable roller support the pipe end at an equiangular spacing from the tool roller. The movable roller is actuated by a jackscrew to forcibly engage the tool roller with the pipe end as the tool is rotated about the pipe end circumference to form the chamfer, the groove and an insertion depth mark.Type: GrantFiled: June 20, 2003Date of Patent: July 19, 2005Assignee: Victaulic Company of AmericaInventors: Douglas R. Dole, Ronald R. Snyder, Sr.
