  • Patent number: 7589226
Abstract: A novel hydroxyalkyldithiocarbamate borate ester compound is presented according to the formula: where R=alkyl C1 to C25; R?=H or CO2R; R?=(CH2)mOH where m=1 to 8, or alkyl C1 to C25; n=1 to 8. The borate ester compound is prepared by reacting boric acid with a novel hydroxyalkyldithiocarbamate ester compound according to the formula, and optionally with an alcohol: where R, R?, R? and n are as above. The hydroxyalkyldithiocarbamate ester is prepared by reacting a hydroxyalkylamine with CS2, and an acrylate or maleate compound. A lubricating composition is based on a major amount of lubricating oil and a minor amount of the hydroxyalkyldithiocarbamate borate ester.

  • Publication number: 20060199746
Abstract: A processes for preparing highly sulfurized molybdenum oxysulfide dithiocarbamates (Mo DTCs) by reacting: [A] a tertiary amine, [B] a hexavalent molybdenum compound, [C] carbon disulfide, [D] water, and [E] a secondary amine are disclosed. The Mo DTCs can be efficiently produced with high sulfur contents and in high yields with low corrosive action and excellent friction properties. The produced Mo DTCs can be used in either grease or lubricating oils as friction modifiers, antiwear agents, extreme pressure agents and antioxidants.

  • Publication number: 20060183648
Abstract: Antimony dithiocarbamate is known to provide extreme pressure (EP) protection in lubricating compositions, such as grease. However, there is a desire to reduce the amount of antimony used in such compositions, while still maintaining acceptable EP performance. It has now been found by using small amounts of either ammonium dithiocarbamate or zinc dithiocarbamate in combination with the antimony dithiocarbamate (SbDTC), a lower amount of SbDTC can be used in the lubricating composition while still maintaining excellent or exceptional EP protection. To counteract the corrosive effects of the SbDTC and ammonium dithiocarbamate composition, it has been found that compounds containing a carboxylic acid group are effective in avoiding copper corrosion.
