Patent number: 8080783Abstract: A multiple function atmospheric pressure ion source interfaced to a mass spectrometer comprises multiple liquid inlet probes configured such that the sprays from two or more probes intersect in a mixing region. Gas phase sample ions or neutral species generated in the spray of one probe can react with reagent gas ions generated from one or more other probes by such ionization methods as Electrospray, photoionization, corona discharge and glow discharge ionization. Reagent ions may be optimally selected to promote such processes as Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Ionization of neutral sample molecules, or charge reduction or electron transfer dissociation of multiply charged sample ions. Selected neutral reagent species can also be introduced into the mixing region to promote charge reduction of multiply charged sample ions through ion-neutral reactions. Different operating modes can be performed alternately or simultaneously, and can be rapidly turned on and off under manual or software control.Type: GrantFiled: February 10, 2009Date of Patent: December 20, 2011Assignees: PerkinElmer Health Sciences, Inc., CHEMSPACE Associates, Inc.Inventors: Craig Whitehouse, Thomas White, Ross Willoughby, Ed Sheehan

Patent number: 7650530Abstract: EEH methods are used during the boot process to actively disable a defective PCI adapter, thereby allowing the system boot to continue without disruption. This allows faulty adapters to be present in the machine without interrupting the boot process. The slots appear to be empty and the devices/adapters residing therein can be actively “hot swapped” out without altering the rest of the machine state.Type: GrantFiled: September 30, 2002Date of Patent: January 19, 2010Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Bradley Ryan Harrington, David Lee Randall, Scott Douglas Walton, David Ross Willoughby

Publication number: 20050269503Abstract: Improvements have been made for selective collecting, focusing, and directing of ions and/or charged particles generated at atmospheric or near atmospheric pressure sources, such as but not limited to, electrospray; atmospheric pressure discharge ionization, chemical ionization, photoionization, and matrix assisted laser desorption ionization; and inductively coupled plasma ionization. A multiple-aperture laminated structure is place at the interface of two pressure regions. Electric fields geometries and strengths across the laminated structure and diameters of the apertures; all of which act to optimize the transfer of the ions from the higher pressure region into the lower pressure region while reducing the gas-load on the lower pressure region. Embodiments of this invention are methods and devices for improving sensitivity of mass spectrometry when coupled to atmospheric, near atmospheric, or higher pressure ionization sources by reducing the gas-load on the vacuum system.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 2, 2005Publication date: December 8, 2005Inventors: Edward Sheehan, Ross Willoughby

Publication number: 20050056776Abstract: Atmospheric pressure, intermediate pressure and vacuum laser desorption ionization methods and ion sources are configured to increase ionization efficiency and the efficiency of transmitting ions to a mass to charge analyzer or ion mobility analyzer. An electric field is applied in the region of a sample target to accumulate ions generated from a local ion source on a solid or liquid phase sample prior to applying a laser desorption pulse. The electric field is changed just prior to or during the desorption laser pulse to promote the desorption of charged species and improve the ionization efficiency of desorbed sample species. After a delay, the electric field may be further changed to optimize focusing and transmission of ions into a mass spectrometer or ion mobility analyzer.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 7, 2004Publication date: March 17, 2005Inventors: Ross Willoughby, Edward Sheehan, Craig Whitehouse

Patent number: 6530031Abstract: A method and apparatus to provide accurate and automated timing of firmware routines, such as initialization tasks at boot time, is provided. Since each task sends a progress indicator code to a display buffer when it starts to run, by saving processor time stamps at the time these codes change, it is possible to calculate and store the time duration for each routine. In the case of system initialization, these time durations can be an indication of problems if they are much longer than normal or an indication of excessive, inefficient, or ineffective processing that might be speed up in order to reduce the total boot time.Type: GrantFiled: November 8, 1999Date of Patent: March 4, 2003Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: David Lee Randall, David Ross Willoughby
