Patent number: 6632521Abstract: Polymeric films having at least one outer layer consisting of a blend of low density polyethylene and a poly-(alkylstyrene) can be heat sealed to non-woven webs such as paper to produce peel openable packages, for example for medical equipment. Such packages can be peeled open with low fiber lift from the non-woven webs.Type: GrantFiled: June 8, 2001Date of Patent: October 14, 2003Assignee: Rexam Medical Packaging LtdInventors: Roy Christopherson, David Thomas Stell

Publication number: 20030165663Abstract: A gas permeable polymeric film laminate comprising two perforate polymeric films bonded together such that there are gas passages between the films from perforations in one film to perforations in the other film, the perforations having a minimum dimension of at least 20 &mgr;m and the passages having a maximum dimension of not more than 15 &mgr;m. Such films can be used as replacements for non-woven webs in packages consisting of a non-woven web bonded to substantially impermeable polymer webs, thereby avoiding fiber contamination which can occur with the latter.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 28, 2003Publication date: September 4, 2003Inventors: Roy Christopherson, Stephen Summers

Patent number: 5965254Abstract: Heat sealable polymeric films having an outer, polymeric heat seal layer with a viscosity at its heat sealing temperatures such that it will flow into interstitial spaces between the fibers of a fibrous material and encapsulate the fibers at such temperatures, an intermediate polymeric layer in contact with the heat seal layer, the intermediate polymeric layer being capable of cohesively splitting when the heat sealed film is peeled, and at least one further polymeric layer, the heat seal layer being easier to fracture than the intermediate layer at the temperature at which peeling is to be effected so that heat seal layer ruptures rather than peeling continuing through the intermediate layer once peeling has been effected through the heat sealed zone.Type: GrantFiled: May 20, 1997Date of Patent: October 12, 1999Assignee: Rexam Medical Packaging Ltd.Inventors: Roy Christopherson, Peter John Miles

Patent number: 5830547Abstract: A peel-open package includes a polymeric film, a lid adhered to the polymeric film along a continuous portion thereof and a product encapsulated between the polymeric film and lid material. The polymeric film is typically a coextruded multiple layer film having a sealable layer and at least one base layer. The sealable layer comprises an ethylene copolymer derived from at least one monomer selected from the group consisting of vinyl acetate and alkylacrylates, a talc additive, and an additive which provides peelability to the heat seal layer. The lid material is preferably a microporous layer to allow sterilization and prevent subsequent contamination by bacteria and other microbial organisms. The peel-open package provides a good seal range for uncoated Tyvek.RTM., evidence of seal integrity, reduced Tinting, and a seal strength which is sufficiently low to prevent the delaminating or branching of the lid material when it is removed. The present invention also includes methods of making peel-open packages.Type: GrantFiled: July 12, 1996Date of Patent: November 3, 1998Assignee: Rexam Medical Packaging, Inc.Inventors: Fiona MacKenzie, Roy Christopherson, David Stell
