Abstract: The present disclosure relates to location and communication systems that can be utilized for locating people, pets and other objects with a software defined radio set. A personal electronic device (PED) such as a cellular telephone, personal data assistant (PDA) or other device that include a software defined radio set can be configured for operation as a locator device. The PED transmits a signal A transponder or micro-transponder (MT) that is tagged to an object is arranged to reply to a transmission received from the PED. The PED based locator is arranged to calculate a distance between the PED and the MT using the time-of-flight (TOF) between the transmission and the receipt of a reply. The absolute geographic position of the PED can be determined using satellite navigation information, while the position of the MT relative to the PED can be determined from the TOF information.

Abstract: Systems and methods are effective in electrically grounding animals that are kept indoors, such as pets (dogs, cats, hamsters, iguanas, fish, birds, etc.), lab caged animals used for clinical trials (guinea pigs, rats, etc.). The inventive apparatus and concepts are also applicable to fish and other creatures in aquariums and animals that are kept indoors at night or during harsh weather, including livestock (cattle, sheep, pigs, lamb, etc.) and horse stables.

Abstract: A plastic water bottle that is molded with ionic silver therein that acts as a binding agent for hazardous leaching elements found in the plastic, such as bisphenol-A, and that also imparts anti-microbial properties, well known to exist with colloidal ionic silver, to the water stored in the bottle as well as the person holding the bottle.

Abstract: A system is disclosed for delivering information, preferably electronic television program guide information, to a user over a telecommunications network. The network includes the capability of determining whether the user's connection to the network is in an on-hook or off-hook condition, and the information is received and stored at a user site when the user's connection to the network is in an on-hook condition. Information is delivered from a guide provider to a phone company switch point over a land-based or wireless dedicated line. When the user's phone is on-hook, the guide data is sent to the user site through a splitter. The line splitter provides the signal to a data decoder circuit, the output of which is connected to a data input terminal in communication with a television receiver, VCR, cable box, or other piece of equipment for displaying the program guide data on a screen.

Abstract: A television system has a television viewing mode and a guide mode. The guide mode includes an electronic program guide (EPG), which provides the viewer program information for tuned programs, and a tape index guide (TIG), which provides information for programs recorded on a video cassette. In both guides, real time images of a program are displayed in a PIP window on the television screen and guide information is displayed in the background. In both guides, the viewer may switch between a currently telecast program or a recorded program. The viewer may access either guide from the television mode and vice versa. In the guide mode, the viewer may independently switch the guide information and the type of program, i.e., tuned or recorded, in the PIP window.

Abstract: A method for protecting against UV radiation includes the steps of extracting a cyanin from a plant and applying it to the skin to act as a sunshield. In the preferred embodiments, the plant cyanin is selected from anthocyanin and betacyanin. Optionally, the plant cyanin is derived from a tropical plant, illustratively including the palm family, tropical fruit and nut bearing plants and flowering plants. A sunscreen composition is provided including a plant derived cyanin and a skin-compatible carrier. Optionally, the cyanin is selected from an anthocyanin and a betacyanin, which is present at a concentration ranging from 0.05% to 75% of the weight of the total composition. A sunscreen composition includes the skin-compatible carrier at a concentration ranging from 25% to 99.95% of the weight of the total composition.

Abstract: Television programs are tuned by a television tuner using a method involving establishing a communications link between a user of a television tuner and database of television schedule information, the database located a site remote from the user. The user communicates program selection criteria to the site remote from the user. A database of television schedule information is searched based on the program selection criteria and program identification data is derived from the database, the program identification data corresponding to television programs meeting the program selection criteria. The program identification data is transmitted over the communications link to a television tuner controller.

Abstract: A television system provides access to Internet data simultaneously with a displayed television program. Data units including data address sites available through a networked computer system such as the Internet are embedded in a television signal along with a television program. Information representing the data address site, such as an icon or descriptive text, is displayed simultaneously with the television program on the television. If the user selects the data address site, a data retrieval terminal in two-way communication with the network and associated with the television establishes a connection with the network and requests the data corresponding to the selected data address site. The retrieved information is then formatted for display.

Abstract: A large database of available television schedule information and a computer for searching the database are located at a site remote from television user terminals that have a television tuner. The database of television schedule information includes program selection criteria and program identification data and the computer is programmed to search the database. The computer at the remote site selects television programs that meet user program selection criteria for viewing or recording at the user terminals.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods are disclosed for decontaminating mail. The preferred embodiment includes a sealable container of sufficient size to hold one or more pieces of mail. A chamber, in gaseous communication with the container, holds a quantity of oxidizer material, and a heater is used to raise the temperature of the oxidizer to form a disinfecting gas that permeates the mail. The oxidizer material is preferably a liquid such as chlorine dioxide or hydrogen peroxide. The apparatus may further include a timer so that the oxidizer is heated for a desired period of time, a pressure relief valve, and/or an indicator responsive to the pressure within the container when sealed.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for ordering supplemental information about programs playing at a broadcast receiver. The method includes reproducing programs from one of a plurality of stations, recording an identification of a station and a time of a program, entering this information into one of a plurality of terminals, coupling the terminal to a depository and identifying a correspondence between the entered station identification and time and a program in a station log to obtain the desired supplemental information.
