  • Patent number: 5429557
Abstract: An automatic transmission for a motor vehicle includes a layshaft gearset (38, 40), a planetary gearset (96), two concentrically arranged planetary gear units (44, 54), certain elements of which are continually interconnected, friction clutches (76, 78), brake band (46), friction brakes (92, 106), and overrunning coupling (80). The input shaft of the transmission is adapted to drive elements of the planetary gear units through the layshaft gearset and planetary gearset. A single gear wheel (57) is formed with the ring gear (48) of the first gear unit and the sun gear (56) of the second gear unit. Carriers (50, 60) of the gear units are connected to an output shaft (64), which drives output gearing (66, 68) and a differential mechanism (70).

  • Patent number: 5315200
Abstract: A wave spring is provided for securing a stator in a dynamoelectric machine. The wave spring is disposed on one end of the stator between a support chassis for the stator and the stator, and compressed thereon to secure the stator in a fixed position in the support chassis. The compressed wave spring provides sufficient force to prevent movement of the stator during operation in various environments. In a further aspect of the invention, the opposing surfaces between which the wave spring is compressed include recesses which receive portions of the wave spring. The recesses are offset, and are effective in further inhibiting rotation of the rotor inside the support chassis for the stator, and may also be used for positioning the stator therein.

  • Patent number: 5295924
Abstract: A multiple speed ratio transmission for use in the driveline of an automotive vehicle includes a hydrokinetic torque converter and three interconnected planetary gear units, several one-way clutches and brakes, friction clutches and friction brakes. The engaged and release state of the friction elements permits the transmission to produce several underdrive speed ratios, a direct drive ratio, an overdrive ratio and reverse drive.

  • Patent number: 5267913
Abstract: An automatic transmission for an automotive vehicle includes first and second simple planetary gear units, certain of whose elements are continually interconnected and certain others are releasably connected through operation of friction elements and one-way couplings. The input shaft of the transmission is adapted to drive elements of the planetary gear units through an underdrive gearset and an overdrive gearset. The various speed ratios result by either underdriving or overdriving an element of the planetary gear unit or both underdriving one element and overdriving another element. Several parallel torque delivery paths include a series arrangement of the overrunning coupling in parallel with a friction element. This arrangement permits engine braking during coast conditions when the coupling overruns. The overdrive gearset is available to produce a speed ratio without involving the planetary gear units.

  • Patent number: 5101688
Abstract: In a transmission system having range shift levers mechanically linked to couplers and shiftable between first and second positions to select ranges of gears and electro-hydraulic powershift clutches for selecting a gear within the range selected by the range shift lever, the powershift clutches are located on each side of at least one of the couplers, between the input shaft and the coupler and between the output shaft and the coupler. A dump solenoid is controlled by operation of a clutch pedal to release fluid from the powershift clutches as the clutch pedal is depressed but before it reaches the fully depressed position so that the coupler is not being driven when coupler shifting takes place.

  • Patent number: 4856375
Abstract: A tractor transmission includes a pair of dual power clutches that connects an engine to an input shaft through a gearset that selectively makes a direct connection or overdrives the input shaft in accordance with the stat of the clutches. Two nonsynchronized couplers connect the input shaft in accordance with the movement of the gear shift lever by the vehicle operator to high speed and low speed forward gear ratios and to a reverse drive mechanism. Hydraulically actuated disk clutches located in the driveline between the couplers and the drive wheels are selectively operated to transmit power through a multiple speed ratio gearset. A friction clutch or torque converter transmits power from the power source to the input of the dual power clutches. A hydraulically-actuated brake holds a gear and countershaft, located between the couplers and the dual power clutches. A clutch pedal is depressed by the operator.

  • Patent number: 4706519
Abstract: A creeper speed mechanism includes a speed reduction gearset driven by an engine through selectively engaged, hydraulically actuated clutches, which are pressurized and vented alternately to produce a high speed ratio and a low speed ratio gear reduction between the engine and the creeper speed mechanism. A coupler connects alternately the creeper speed mechanism and the engine to the transmission input shaft in accordance with the position of a shift rail slidably mounted within the transmission casing. The hydraulic system that actuates the clutches pressurizes a cylinder and moves the shift rail and coupler to engage the creeper speed mechanism. A compression spring moves the coupler away from the creeper speed mechanism and toward engagement with the clutch output. The clutches are vented each time the coupler is moved to a neutral position out of engagement with the creeper speed mechanism and the clutch output.

  • Patent number: 4686869
Abstract: A tractor transmission includes a pair of dual power clutches that connects an engine to an input shaft through a gearset that selectively makes a direct connection or overdrives the shaft in accordance with the engaged or disengaged state of the clutches. A synchronizer connects the input shaft to an interior shaft of the transmission. A gear selector moves the sleeve of the synchronizer into engagement either with a gear on the input shaft or a gear on the interior shaft. When certain upshifts are made, the gear selector causes the clutch that overdrives the input shaft gear to disengage and the clutch that directly connects the input shaft gear to the engine to engage. This action slows the gear toward the synchronous speed at which the synchronizer connects the input gear to the interior shaft with minimal shifting effort.
