Publication number: 20090173539Abstract: An anti-stall tool in an oil well drilling assembly that controls reciprocation of the drill bit by controller that alters weight-on-bit (WOB) depending upon measured downhole pressure or torque. The downhole controller keeps the drill bit rotating by maintaining WOB during normal drilling operations, increasing WOB if sensed working pressure indicates that drill bit loading or torque is undesirably low, and reversing WOB by applying a spring force for retracting the drill bit if excessive working pressure or torque is sensed.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 5, 2009Publication date: July 9, 2009Inventors: Philip Wayne Mock, Rudolph Ernst Krueger, IV

Patent number: 7493967Abstract: A hydraulically powered tractor adapted for advancement through a borehole including an elongate body, aft and forward gripper assemblies, and a valve control assembly housed within the elongate body. The aft and forward gripper assemblies are adapted for selective engagement with the inner surface of the borehole. The valve control assembly includes a gripper control valve for directing pressurized fluid to the aft and forward gripper assemblies. The valve control assembly also includes a propulsion control valve for directing fluid to an aft or forward power chamber for advancing the body relative to the actuated gripper assembly. Aft and forward mechanically actuated valves may be provided for controlling the position of the gripper control valve by detecting and signaling when the body has completed an advancement stroke relative to an actuated gripper assembly.Type: GrantFiled: March 7, 2008Date of Patent: February 24, 2009Assignee: Western Well Tool, Inc.Inventors: Philip W Mock, Rudolph Ernst Krueger, V, Duane Bloom, Norman Bruce Moore

Publication number: 20080149339Abstract: A gripper mechanism for downhole tool is disclosed that includes a linkage mechanism and a flexible toe disposed over the linkage mechanism. In operation, an axial force generated by a power section of the gripper expands the linkage mechanism, which applies a radial expansion force to the flexible toe. For certain expansion diameters, the expansion force can be primarily transmitted to the toe from a roller-ramp interface expanding the linkage. For other expansion diameters, the expansion force can be primarily transmitted to the toe by expansion of the linkage in a three-bar linkage configuration. For other expansion diameters, the expansion force can be primarily transmitted to the toe by expansion of the linkage in a four-bar linkage configuration. Thus, the gripper can provide a desired expansion force over a large range of expansion diameters.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 13, 2007Publication date: June 26, 2008Inventor: Rudolph Ernst Krueger V

Patent number: 7275593Abstract: A gripper assembly for anchoring a tool within a downhole passage and for possibly assisting movement of the tool within the passage. The gripper assembly includes an elongated mandrel and flexible toes that can be radially displaced to grip onto the surface of the passage. The toes are displaced by the interaction of a driver slidable on the mandrel and a driver interaction element on the toes. In one embodiment, the toes are displaced by the interaction of rollers and ramps that are longitudinally movable with respect to one another. In another embodiment, the toes are displaced by the interaction of toggles that rotate with respect to the toes.Type: GrantFiled: May 3, 2006Date of Patent: October 2, 2007Assignee: Western Well Tool, Inc.Inventors: Duane Bloom, Norman Bruce Moore, Rudolph Ernst Krueger, V

Patent number: 6367366Abstract: A sensor assembly including a sensor mounted on the piston and a transmitter mounted on either the piston or cylinder. Preferably the transmitter includes a wheel which engages the wall of the cylinder so as to rotate as the piston reciprocates within the cylinder. The wheel includes one or more magnets which emit a magnetic field that is received by the sensor as the wheel rotates whereby the sensor provides a signal indicative of the rotation of the wheel. The sensor then sends the signal to a logic component which determines the direction, travel and position of the piston within the cylinder.Type: GrantFiled: June 20, 2000Date of Patent: April 9, 2002Assignee: Western Well Tool, Inc.Inventors: Duane Bloom, James W.
