Patent number: 8272220Abstract: A thermal machine including a wall defining a hot gas duct for transferring a hot gas stream and a cooling jacket disposed at a distance from the wall on an outside of the hot gas duct so as to define a cooling duct with an inlet and an outlet. The cooling duct is configured to conduct a cooling medium along an external face of the wall from the inlet to an outlet in a direction counter to a flow of hot gas in the hot gas duct. An impingement cooling plate is disposed at the inlet of the cooling duct and includes cooling baffle holes configured such that cooling medium entering the cooling duct through the cooling baffle holes flows in a direction perpendicular to the wall. The impingement cooling plate is positioned such that an inflow-side edge sealingly abuts the wall of the hot gas duct so as to reduce a transverse flow of the cooling medium through the cooling duct.Type: GrantFiled: August 20, 2010Date of Patent: September 25, 2012Assignee: Alstom Technology LtdInventors: Hartmut Haehnle, Gregory Vogel, Russell Bond Jones, Marion Duggans (-Oneil), Remigi Tschuor

Patent number: 7987678Abstract: A hot gas duct, such as a combustion casing in a gas turbine engine, includes a duct splitter held within the hot gas duct in at least three, preferably four, locations spaced around a peripheral edge of the duct splitter. At least one, preferably two, of the holding locations each comprise a generally cylindrical mounting that projects through a wall of the hot gas duct to engage an edge portion of the duct splitter by means of a slot formed in a circular face of the mounting. Mutually contacting surfaces of the slot and the duct splitter comprise hard face coatings to combat wear due to vibration and differential thermal expansion and contraction. The mountings have cooling holes that penetrate the mounting, so that coolant can flow through the mountings and into the interior of the hot gas duct to cool the mountings and the hard face coatings.Type: GrantFiled: March 13, 2007Date of Patent: August 2, 2011Assignee: Alstom Technology Ltd.Inventors: Orestes J. Maurell, Russell Bond Jones, Marion Duggans, Sejko Kolev

Publication number: 20110113785Abstract: A thermal machine is provided, in particular a gas turbine, which includes an annular combustion chamber which is bounded on the outside by an outer shell and an inner shell. The outer shell and the inner shell are each split on a separating plane into an upper half and a lower half, which are mechanically interlocked by welding one to the other on the separating plane. Increased mechanical robustness and a longer life of the combustion chamber are achieved in that an additional mechanical interlock is provided on the separating planes in order to absorb tensile and shear forces acting on the separating planes.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 9, 2010Publication date: May 19, 2011Applicant: ALSTOM TECHNOLOGY LTDInventors: Remigi TSCHUOR, Russell Bond JONES, Nilze Isabel SEDA-MAURELL, Marion Oneil DUGGANS
