Abstract: A cigarette includes a filter element including a carbon-containing paper or a paper containing molecular sieves. The paper contacts the filter material, such as cellulose acetate tow, within the filter element, either by circumscribing the filter material or by being gathered with non-carbon-containing filter material. The paper is useful as a plug wrap for a filter element. In several embodiments, longitudinal grooves are provided on the periphery of the filter element.

Abstract: A smoking article having a controlled yield of wet particulate matter and a method of making a smoking article with predetermined total and per puff yields of wet particulate matter. The smoking article has a tobacco rod connected to an air ventilated compound filter having two abutted filter segments, a rod end segment with a passage therethrough and a mouth end segment. The pressure drop of the abutment interface between the segments is selected to be in a range of from about 10 mm to about 100 mm water gauge. The total pressure drop of the filter including the interface and the amount of air dilution can be selected to provide a smoking article with a level per puff yield or a decreasing per puff yield.

Abstract: A new substrate for cigarettes includes an overwrapped rod of gathered cellulose-based paper having an outer diameter of from about 4 mm to about 8 mm; wherein the paper has a basis weight in the range of about 10 g/m.sup.2 to about 90 g/m.sup.2 ; and the paper can include up to about 50 weight percent of one or more burn retardant hydrated salts. The substrate typically comprises an overwrapped rod of a gathered web of a nonwoven cellulosic material, having a length of about 10 mm; wherein the dry unit weight of the substrate rod is from about 20 mg to about 120 mg; and wherein the web of cellulosic material is embossed or scored prior to gathering, thereby providing a substrate rod with a pressure drop of from about 2 to about 40 mm of H.sub.2 O, under FTC conditions.

Abstract: A wrapper for use in smoking articles such as cigarettes, and in particular, to a wrapper for smoking articles having a heat source, a physically separate aerosol generating means, and a mouthend piece. More specifically the invention relates to smoking articles which employ a substantially non-burnable paper used as an innerwrap and/or outerwrap which encircles at least a portion of the fuel element of such smoking articles.

Abstract: The present invention relates to an improved wrapper for a smoking article haviing a combustible fuel element encircled by an insulating layer and a physically separate aerosol generating means as well as to smoking articles employing such wrappers. The wrapper encircles at least a portion of the insulating layer for the fuel element and comprises a permeable sheet material which during burning of the fuel provides a coherent layer to assist in controlling the amount of peripheral air to the fuel element during smoking.

Abstract: The present invention relates to smoking articles having an improved mouthend piece. More specifically, it relates to cigarette-type smoking articles comprising a fuel element, a physically separate aerosol generating means including an aerosol forming material, and means for delivering the aerosol produced by the aerosol generating means to the user in the form of a mouthend piece, the mouthend piece including a nonwoven web segment formed from meltblown thermoplastic fibers or filaments, and a spacer member located between the aerosol generating means and the non woven web segment.

Abstract: The adhesion of pitch-based carbon fiber to organic resin is improved by treatment at room temperature with a gaseous atmosphere containing from 100 to 1000 parts per million of ozone.
