  • Patent number: 8298243
Abstract: A device for removing polyps is provided and includes a tubular member having proximal and distal ends. The distal end of the tubular member includes a first electrode extending thereacross. The first electrode defines at least one opening therein. The polyp removal device further includes a snare portion operably extending from within the distal end of the tubular member and through at least one opening defined in the first electrode. The tubular member is configured to deliver electrosurgical energy between the first electrode and the snare portion. The polyp removal device further includes a handle portion operatively extending from within the proximal end of the tubular member. The snare portion may include a second electrode. The snare portion and the first electrode are configured to grasp and seal a polyp therebetween. The first and second electrodes may be independently activated.

  • Publication number: 20110036183
Abstract: Testing system for measuring closure pressure between jaw members of electrosurgical forceps. The testing system includes a testing platform, a pair of selectively adjustable instrument supports, a testing stand. The platform has an elongated bed that supports an instrument rest, which supports the electrosurgical forceps. The pair of instrument supports are associated with the elongated bed and secure the forceps atop the elongated bed. The testing stand is disposed at a distal end of the elongated bed and supports a piece of testing material. The testing stand includes a layer of visco-elastic material and a pressure sensitive film. The layer of visco-elastic material forms a pocket. The pressure sensitive film is disposed within the pocket of the visco-elastic layer. The pressure sensitive film is adapted to electromechanically communicate with a diagnostic system to measure the closure pressure between jaw members when they are in a clamped configuration.

  • Publication number: 20090024126
Abstract: A bipolar surgical instrument for fusing tissue includes first and second grasping members each having an end effector assembly attached at a distal end thereof. Each end effector assembly including a first jaw member with an active electrode disposed thereon and a second jaw member with a dielectric member disposed thereon. The first and second jaw members of each end effector are disposed in substantial opposing relation relative to one another and are movable from a first spaced position relative to one another to a second closer position for grasping tissue. Each active electrode is operably connected to an electrosurgical energy source. A surgical crimping tool is included and is selectively positionable to mechanically engage and crimp the active electrodes of the grasping members in a juxtaposed, side-by-side manner relative to one another prior to electrosurgical activation to fuse tissue into a unified tissue mass.
