  • Patent number: 10477423
Abstract: A method and system for managing channel state reporting rate for transmission of channel state reports from a wireless communication device (WCD) to its serving base station based. The channel state reports provide metrics regarding a wireless communication channel between the WCD and the base station, and the channel state reporting rate defines how often the WCD will transmit such reports. Per the disclosure, the channel state reporting rate could be set to a higher value (for more frequent channel state reporting) if the WCD provides such connectivity and a lower value (perhaps a default value) if not, and the reporting rate could be set higher as the WCD provides connectivity for a greater number of other devices.

  • Patent number: 10212640
Abstract: A Long Term Evolution (LTE) network connects wireless communication devices to an Internet. In the LTE network, a Packet Data Network Gateway (P-GW) exchanges user communications between the wireless communication devices and the Internet. The P-GW determines a number of additional wireless communication devices the P-GW can serve and transfers the number to a Mobility Management Entity (MME). The MME allocates a new wireless communication device to the P-GW based on the number of additional wireless communication devices reported by the P-GW. The MME may redirect one of the wireless communication devices to the P-GW based on the number.

  • Patent number: 10098039
Abstract: Disclosed are methods and systems for setting a timeout period. In particular, a BS may have data storage defining a buffer. Also, the BS may be configured to (i) provide an air interface through which the BS serves UEs, (ii) buffer data packets destined to individual UEs, and (iii) apply a buffer timeout process according to which the BS drops a data packet from the buffer in response to that data packet being in the buffer for a timeout period. As such, the BS may make a determination that a served UE is a relay-UE that provides wireless backhaul connectivity for a relay-BS, and may set the timeout period based on the determination. When the BS then applies the buffer timeout process, the BS drops a data packet from the buffer in response to that data packet being in the buffer for the timeout period set based on the determination.

  • Patent number: 10045346
Abstract: Disclosed are methods and systems for selecting a carrier on which to serve a user equipment device (UE). In particular, a base station may determine that a speed of movement of the UE is threshold high. In response to determining that the speed of movement of the UE is threshold high, the base station may select a carrier based on a group delay variation (GDV) of the selected carrier. For example, the base station may respond to the determining by selecting a carrier having a threshold low GDV. In another example, the base station may respond to the determining by selecting the carrier having the lowest GDV among two or more candidate carriers being considered as part of the selection process. As such, once a carrier is selected, the base station may then serve the UE on the selected carrier.

  • Patent number: 9924491
Abstract: Disclosed is a method and system for managing a mobile terminal connection. A paging controller attempts to page a mobile terminal and detects failure of the paging. • Patent number: 9813939
Abstract: According to aspects of the disclosure, a method and system are provided for managing signaling in a wireless communication network. In some aspects, a base station serves a user equipment device (UE) over an air interface connection between the base station and the UE, and a bearer extends between the UE and a gateway. An example method may involve determining a quality of service (QoS) level of the bearer, and responsively selecting a channel state information (CSI) reporting rate based on the determined QoS level. Further, in some aspects, responsive to the selection of the CSI reporting rate, the method may involve causing the UE to periodically report CSI to the base station according to the selected CSI reporting rate. The method may be performed, in whole or in part, by the UE, the base station, and/or another entity in the wireless communication system.

  • Patent number: 9813968
Abstract: Systems, methods, and software described herein provide enhancements for the redirection of communication requests from a Long Term Evolution (LTE) network to a secondary wireless communication network. In one implementation, a method of operating a mobility management entity (MME) includes receiving, over a LTE network, channel status information for channels in a secondary wireless communication network from wireless communication devices. The method further provides receiving a communication request over the LTE network from a wireless communication device, and in response to the communication request, identifying a channel in the secondary wireless communication network to support the communication request based on the channel status information. The method also includes transferring a notification to the wireless communication device to indicate the identified channel.

  • Patent number: 9433009
Abstract: Disclosed is a method and system for channel selection. As disclosed, a wireless communication system includes a base station that is configured to operate on a plurality of channels, each having a respective level of port-to-port isolation. The system determines a measure of quality of an air interface between the base station and a user equipment device (UE) served by the base station. The system then selects, from the plurality of channels, a channel on which the base station should serve the UE, where the selecting is based at least in part on (i) the determined measure of quality of the air interface between the base station and the UE and (ii) a correlation between the determined measure of quality of the air interface and the respective level of port-to-port isolation of the channel. Upon the selection, the base station serves the UE on the selected channel.

  • Patent number: 9414286
Abstract: According to aspects of the present disclosure, a method and system are provided for managing handover. In accordance with the disclosure, while a source base station serves a UE, the source base station receives from the UE a measurement report providing an indication of a plurality of candidate target base stations having coverage detected by the UE. Responsive to the report, a CSI reporting rate is determined for each of the candidate targets on a per base station basis. A channel coherence is also determined for the UE. The communication system then selects a target base station from the plurality of candidate targets based on (i) the determined channel coherence and (ii) the determined CSI reporting rates, and the source base station then triggers handover of the UE from the source base station to the selected target base station.

  • Patent number: 9398508
Abstract: One embodiment takes the form of a method carried out by a handover source while the handover source is serving a UE with communication service at a quality of service level. The method includes the handover source transmitting, to a first handover target, a first handover request including an indication of the quality of service level. Next, in response to the transmitted first handover request, the handover source receives from the first handover target a response indicating that the first handover target does not support the quality of service level, but specifying a second handover target that supports the quality of service level. The handover source may then transmit to the specified second handover target a second handover request seeking handover of the UE from being served by the handover source to being served by the second handover target.

  • Patent number: 9088934
Abstract: Disclosed is a method and corresponding apparatus for management of access probe transmission from a wireless communication device (WCD) to a radio access network (RAN). The WCD determines that a particular coverage area is not the strongest coverage area detected by the WCD, and the WCD responsively transmits an access probe to the RAN in that particular coverage area. For instance, the WCD may define a sequence of access probe transmissions including at least one transmission to just a coverage area that the WCD deems to not be the strongest and further including at least one transmission to just a coverage area that the WCD deems to be the strongest.
