  • Publication number: 20140207296
Abstract: Embodiments of the invention generally relate to wind turbine generators, and more specifically to the deactivation of wind turbines in a wind turbine park. A wind park controller may be configured to retrieve data indicating fatigue experienced by each wind turbine of the wind turbine park, and deactivate those turbines determined to be the most fatigued, thereby increasing the lifetime of turbines in the wind turbine park.

  • Publication number: 20140178197
Abstract: A method of controlling a wind turbine comprising blades attached to a rotor hub for rotation in a rotor plane and a control system for individually pitching the blades relative to the hub. The method comprises dividing the rotor plane into a number of sectors, determining the individual sectors for each blade during the rotation by means of an azimuth angle sensor, and obtaining blade sensor data from a blade sensor on an individual blade relating to a sector, and comparing the obtained data with data relating to the same sector and representing blade sensor data on other blades. When an event is detected in a given sector, an individual pitch contribution is determined in the sector, and the blades are then pitched according to this individual pitch contribution for that given sector at least partly during passage of the sector.

  • Patent number: 8694173
Abstract: Methods for controlling a wind power plant that includes a plurality of wind turbines being operatively connected to a plant collector grid a power plant controller, a wind power plant, and a computer program product. The method may include generating an actual power reference signal in response to a determination of the power production of the wind power plant and comparing a desired power reference signal with the actual power reference signal. The method may include either applying a first filter characteristic as part of a generation of a wind turbine power reference if the desired power reference signal exceeds the actual power reference signal, or applying a second filter characteristic as part of the generation of the wind turbine power reference if the actual power reference signal exceeds the desired power reference signal. The first filter characteristic is different from the second filter characteristic.

  • Publication number: 20140030059
Abstract: One or more variable pitch airfoils in fluid communication with a rotor of a fluid turbine can control the amount of energy directed to the rotor, and further control the amount of energy generated by the turbine. Varying the pitch of the airfoils may provide a means of controlling the power output of a fluid turbine without the need to control the pitch of the rotor blades, and may further provide a means of mitigating the effects of wind shear on the rotor. Variable pitch airfoils may also include a means of controlling the active power, reactive power and SCADA, of a group of fluid turbines.

  • Publication number: 20130313827
Abstract: The present invention relates to systems and methods for maintain the active power production of a fluid turbine and regulating the temperature of an electrical generating component by controlling the reactive power production. A thermal parameter of the electrical generating component is monitored. If the electrical generating component exceeds a thermal parameter the reactive power production of the turbine is reduced. A fluid turbine may be de-rated to further reduce an electrical generating component's thermal parameter. A fluid turbine may shut down to further reduce an electrical generating component's thermal parameter. A fluid turbine's power production is re-started when the electrical generating component returns to an acceptable thermal parameter.

  • Publication number: 20130161955
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of controlling a wind turbine having a rotor with pitchable wind turbine blades and a generator for producing power, where a pitch reference value for the wind turbine blades is determined, and an operational parameter representing a loading on the wind turbine rotor exerted by the wind is measured at time intervals. A variation parameter reflecting a variation of the operational parameter over time is determined and used in the determination of a minimum pitch limit value of the pitch reference value. The wind turbine is then controlled according to the pitch reference value only if the pitch reference value is above or equal to the minimum pitch limit value, and otherwise according to the minimum pitch limit value.

  • Publication number: 20130144449
Abstract: The disclosure is provides for warning a wind turbine generator (WTG) in a wind park of an extreme wind event. According to one embodiment, one or more front line WTGs of the wind park that detect extreme wind events and provide the warning are adaptively selected based on a measured wind direction. Thus, the selection of front line WTGs is adaptive to changing wind conditions. In another embodiment, a wind park includes a group of one or more WTGs of a first type located in an inner region of the wind park and a plurality of WTGs of a second type located in an outer region of the wind park that at least partially surrounds the inner region. The first type of WTG is structurally weaker and/or rated for higher performance than the second type of WTG.

  • Publication number: 20100286835
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for curtailing electrical power supplied from a wind turbine or a group of wind turbines to an associated power supply grid, the method comprising the steps of determining an available electrical power level from the wind turbine facility and setting a wind speed independent curtailment level. The curtailment level may be a percentage of an actual available electrical power level or a fixed power level. The method further comprises the step of operating the wind turbine facility in such a way that the generated electrical power supplied from the wind turbine facility equals the difference between an actual available electrical power level and the curtailment level. The present invention further relates to a wind turbine facility and a curtailing controller for carrying out the invention.
