  • Patent number: 5939794
Abstract: A series hybrid vehicle includes a generator to be driven by an engine, a battery to be charged by the output power of the generator, and a motor for driving the vehicle using the output power sent from the generator and the output power sent from the battery. In an engine control system for the series hybrid vehicle, the values of power demanded by the vehicle when the vehicle is running (i.e., power demand values) are derived based on various engine operation indicative sensor signals, and a running state of the vehicle is estimated based on a frequency distribution of the power demand and a mean value of such power demand values. The system selects one of prestored control patterns depending on the estimated vehicle running state and controls the engine based on the selected control pattern so as to further control the output power of the generator. The system is also applicable to a parallel hybrid vehicle.

  • Patent number: 5890370
Abstract: A refrigerating system of vapor compression type operating at a super critical area, while obtaining an increased efficiency. The refrigerating system includes a pressure control means for controlling the temperature and the pressure at the outlet of a heat emitter. The pressure control valve responds to a pressure difference between the inlet pressure of the refrigerant to the pressure control valve and the pressure in an outwardly sealed chamber in which the refrigerant is filled such that, with respect to the volume of the chamber under closed condition of the pressure control valve, a density of the refrigerant is in a range between a density of a saturated liquid at a temperature of 0.degree. C. and a density at the critical point of the refrigerant. As a result, the pressure and the temperature at the outlet of the heat emitter is controlled substantially along the optimum control line .eta.max, resulting in an effective execution of a refrigerating cycle at the critical area.

  • Patent number: 5781317
Abstract: A method of producing a holographic optical element which is capable of imparting complex corrections to the holographic optical element and of effecting the exposure using a short optical path permitting little disturbance to be infiltrated. A correction holographic optical element 13 for correcting the characteristics of the holographic optical element is disposed in at least one of the optical paths of an object beam 35 and a reference beam 36 that fall on a photosensitive material 11. The object beam 35 may be one obtained by reflecting the reference beam 36 by a reflection-type holographic optical element such as a reflection-type master holographic optical element 12. In the case of a holographic optical element used for the head-up display, the correction holographic optical element 13 may be given characteristics for correcting the curvature of the windshield or characteristics for correcting color aberration.

  • Patent number: 5752391
Abstract: A refrigerating system of a gas injection type having first and second stage pressure reducers 3 and 5, between which a separator 4 is arranged, and a conduit 10 for introduction of a gaseous refrigerant separated at a separator 4 into a compressor 1. A by-pass conduit 11 is connected to a refrigerating system so that the second stage pressure reducer 5 is by-passed. An ON-OFF control valve 12 is arranged in the by-pass conduit. The control valve 12 is switched to an opened condition during a low load of the air conditioning system, which makes a pressure difference low between the outlet of the separator 4 and an evaporator 6, which prevent gas injection from being executed.

  • Patent number: 5722588
Abstract: In a combustion heater, a fuel feed unit supplies a fuel uniformly into a burner so as to prevent incomplete combustion in the burner. When a vaporization member is provided in the burner, the fuel feed unit supplies the fuel uniformly all over the surface of the vaporization member so that the incomplete combustion in the burner is also prevented. In addition or alternatively, the fuel feed unit includes a fuel feed pipe and a valve unit which is provided at a tip portion of the fuel feed pipe, so as to prevent emissions of an unburned fuel. In addition or alternatively, a temperature of the fuel supplied to the burner is monitored, and an operation of the fuel feed unit or an air feed unit for supplying combustion air to the burner is controlled based on the monitored fuel temperature so as to provide a desirable air-fuel mixture for preventing incomplete combustion in the burner.

  • Patent number: 5704219
Abstract: In an air conditioning apparatus employing a heat pump system in which a cooling evaporator and a heating condenser are disposed inside the compartment. A compressor is provided with a gas injection port, a fixed throttle for reducing pressure of refrigerant on high pressure side in a refrigerating cycle to middle pressure, and a gas-liquid separator for separating the middle pressure refrigerant of which pressure is reduced by the fixed throttle. The gaseous refrigerant separated by the gas-liquid separator is introduced into the gas injection port. In a heating operation, the refrigerant circulates through the compressor, the condenser, the fixed throttle, the gas-liquid separator, an expansion valve, an outdoor heat exchanger, and the compressor as a closed circuit, while the gaseous refrigerant separated by the gas-liquid separator is injected into the compressor through the gas injection port. As a result, when the outside air temperature is low, the heating capacity is improved.

  • Patent number: 5701752
Abstract: When heating the passenger compartment of a vehicle during cold weather, an air switching outlet is operated to allow the entry of outside air with an interior blower being operated to facilitate the entry of the outside air. A condenser door is operated to close an air passage of the condenser and a bypass passage is opened so that outside air flows to the passenger compartment of the vehicle while bypassing the condenser. Further, only a defogging outlet is opened and the incoming air is blown out from this defogging outlet toward the windshield of the vehicle so that a low humidity air curtain is formed proximate to the inner surface of the windshield. After completing the warm-up of the heat pump cycle, the condenser door is switched such that the air blown in by the blower passes the interior condenser to start the heating of the passenger compartment.

  • Patent number: 5698962
Abstract: A battery condition monitoring system which may be employed in an electric vehicle is disclosed. This system determines a terminal voltage of a battery under discharge of a given current and a consumption of electric energy stored in the battery and calculates a rate of change in terminal voltage of the battery relative to change in consumption of electric energy. When a difference between the rate of change in terminal voltage of the battery and a reference rate representing a rate of change in terminal voltage of a normal battery relative to change in consumption of electric energy is greater than a given value, the system determines that memory effect is occurring in the battery.

  • Patent number: 5652069
Abstract: A battery power monitoring apparatus for use in an electric automobile is provided. The battery power monitoring apparatus determines the amount of available reserve electric power remaining in a storage battery based on electric power discharged from the storage battery to an electric motor and a battery characteristic stored in a memory, representing a relation between a voltage level at which a given level of current flows from the storage battery and the then discharged electric power. The battery characteristic is updated based on the latest detected voltage of the storage battery and current flowing from the storage battery. The battery power monitoring apparatus determines that charge polarization has occurred when a voltage level of the storage battery from which the given level of current flows is increased, and prohibits the updating of the battery characteristic. With this operation, the amount of available electric power is calculated correctly even under the influence of charge polarization.

  • Patent number: 5617995
Abstract: In a combustion heater, at the time of ignition, a fuel supply amount is increased in a stepwise fashion. On the other hand, at the time of extinction, the fuel supply amount is decreased in a stepwise fashion. The fuel supply amount is increased stepwise using different fuel increasing amounts or different fuel increasing periods, both depending on heat quantities generated by a burner at respective fuel increasing time points. At the time of extinction, the fuel supply amount and an air supply amount are both reduced to given values, respectively, and held at the given values for a given time period. After lapse of the given time period, the fuel supply amount is reduced to zero, while the air supply amount is held at the given value for a further given time period. The air supply amount is changed with a given time delay relative to a change of the fuel supply amount. The time delay may be adjusted depending on a temperature in the burner.

  • Patent number: 4669780
Abstract: Apparatus for controlling a plurality of power seats in a vehicle includes a plurality of power seats, each having adjusting mechanisms for configuring the power seat in a number of different operational states. Operational state detectors then detect the operational state of each power seat. A switching device is provided for adjusting the adjustment mechanisms of the power seats to a desired operational state.
