  • Patent number: 4301855
Abstract: An apparatus for producing a metal ribbon has a rotary roll. Molten metal is poured from a heated nozzle onto the outer peripheral surface of the roll to form a solidified metal ribbon on the roll surface. To facilitate easy separation of the metal ribbon from the roll surface, a jet of a non-oxidizing gas is directed to the point of separation of the ribbon from the roll surface. The roll surface just upstream of the metal-pouring nozzle is enclosed by a cover the inside of which is evacuated to assure intimate contact of the poured metal with the roll surface and thus improve cooling of the poured metal. A heater is provided in the cover to heat the roll surface just upstream of the metal-pouring nozzle for thereby removing dew droplets and ambient gases from the roll surface whereby the formation of depressions or recesses in the roll-containing ribbon surface is prevented.

  • Patent number: 4253038
Abstract: A light source is disclosed which can be used in atomic absorption analysis using the Zeeman effect. In operation, an external magnetic field is applied to the hollow cathode of the light source to cause the Zeeman-splitting of an emission line from the cathode material. The hollow cathode is made of a ferromagnetic metal as which is the element of interest for analysis and a metal for reducing the magnetic shield of the externally applied magnetic field by the ferromagnetic metal so that the external magnetic field effectively acts on the hollow portion of the cathode to provide the desired Zeeman-splitting. The hollow cathode is designed such that the product of the saturation flux densities of the cathode materials and the volume thereof is equal to or smaller than 0.2(Wb.multidot.m).times.10.sup.-6. The emission line from the cathode material is produced by excitation from a high frequency power supply, the power supply being connected to the cathode and the anode of the light source.

  • Patent number: 4217568
Abstract: A non-magnetic metal for integral casting is poured into a mold supporting a couple of magnetic pole pieces with a distance piece placed therebetween. The pole pieces are thus fixed as cast integrally with the mold, and subsequently the distance piece is removed so that there are provided magnetic pole pieces of the type best suited to a nuclear magnetic resonance apparatus, etc.

  • Patent number: 4122386
Abstract: A uniform magnetic field generating device for generating a uniform magnetic field such as that required in a nuclear magnetic resonance device is disclosed. In prior art devices, in order to obtain a highly uniform magnetic field space, a parallel gap has been formed between pole pieces which were magnetically homogenized and mounted on magnets coupled by a yoke. In place of such pole pieces, a magnetically homogenized pole block or a pole block sandwiched by pole pieces is inserted between the magnets and a cylindrical hole or space is formed in the pole block, a sectional area of the space taken in parallel with the direction of a magnetic field due to the magnets and perpendicular to the axial line of the space being of circular, ellipse or rectangular shape, whereby a highly uniform magnetic field space is established.

  • Patent number: 4106627
Abstract: An apparatus for use in separation and recovery of pieces of different materials according to the difference in electric conductivity of each kind of materials, by utilizing the interaction between a magnetic field, induced by the eddy current and an external magnetic field. The separating capability of the apparatus of the type is largely dependent upon the shape of pieces being separated as well as the difference in electric conductivity between the pieces of different materials. According to the apparatus of the present invention, samples to be separated are rolled into a flat shape, then subjected to the screening, followed by their passing through a plurality of rotating magnetic fields whose intensities are being increased one by one, whereby the sample pieces are separated effectively according to their electric conductivity, and thus recovered.

  • Patent number: 4042898
Abstract: A pole piece for use in a magnet device and a method for manufacturing same, in which the structure of the pole piece for use in a magnet device used in an analyzing apparatus for analyzing such as nuclear magnetic resonance is varied in concentric fashion from the center towards the outer circumference of the pole piece. The pole piece is manufactured according to the die-forging, whereby the magnetic properties of the pole piece become hetrogenous in concentric fashion. The use of such a pole piece brings about a magnet device which is compact in size and which provides a strong and uniform magnetic field.
