    Abstract: Disclosed are liquid crystal phase-retarders and linear polarizers and methods and apparatus for making the same. The liquid crystal phase-retarder is realized by a liquid crystal film structure having one or more phase retardation regions formed therein. Each phase retardation region has an optical axis specified by the direction and depth of orientation of liquid crystal molecules along the surface of the liquid crystal film structure. The liquid crystal linear polarizer is realized by a liquid crystal film structure having a chiral phase region within which liquid crystal molecules are cholesterically ordered (FIG. 3). One or more nematic phase regions are formed along the surface of the liquid crystal film structure within which liquid crystal molecules are oriented along a direction and to a surface depth sufficient to realize one or more phase retardation regions therein having optical axes along the direction of liquid crystal molecules orientation.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to beam steering and scanning devices which utilize cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) elements arranged in branches to form a logic tree. Each branch comprises an active and passive CLC element; the former further comprising a half-wave retarder and an electrode and the latter only the CLC element. Each succeeding branch contains twice as many branches as a preceding branch and, by activating active CLC element electrodes under control of a programmable pulsed source, inputs applied to the first stage of a logic tree are delivered as a scanned line of electromagnetic energy or light to the imaging cells of the last stage of the logic tree. By stacking identical logic trees with a laser source for each tree, a flat panel imaging array or display device is formed in which the transmission losses are minimized.

    Abstract: A liquid crystal display (LCD) panel construction for producing color images for viewing by a viewer. The LCD panel construction comprises: an illumination panel for producing light including spectral components with wavelengths in a visible band of the electromagenetic spectrum; a plurality of pixel regions within a predefined image display area, wherein each pixel region has a plurality of subpixel region and each said subpixel region within each pixel region has a light transmission portion and a light blocking portion, and each light transmission portion and light blocking portion has a frontside disposed in the direction in the viewer and a backside in the direction of the illumination panel. The illumination panel illuminates the plurality of pixel regions from the backside thereof so that a color image is formed the said plurality of pixel regions for viewing.

    Abstract: A light polarizer includes a plurality of discrete layers of birefringent film disposed in superposed relation on a transparent substrate. The planar components of the optic axes of each successive one of the discrete layers are angularly offset relative each preceding one of the discrete layers by a predetermined angle in one of either a positive or negative direction to provide the light polarizer with selectivity for either right-handed circularly polarized (RHCP) or left-handed circularly polarized (LHCP) incident light. In another aspect of the invention, the layers are of quarter-wave thickness having planar components orthogonally offset to provide selectivity for either right or left linearly polarized light. In a still further aspect of the invention, an optically isotropic layer of quarter-wave thickness is disposed between adjacent birefringent quarter-wave plates.

    Abstract: A solid state dye laser is adapted for use in a solid state dye laser assembly having a pump adapted to emit light at a first frequency and intensity. The solid state dye laser includes an elongated web of polymeric host material having a gain medium disposed therein, the gain medium being in a substantially solid state and doped with a fluorescent dye adapted to emit light within a predetermined spectral tuning range. The gain medium includes polymeric cholesteric liquid crystal disposed in a planar texture and frozen into a characteristic wavelength. The solid state dye laser, including the gain medium, is adapted for convenient movement relative to the pump.

    Abstract: This invention relates to a three-dimensional package or module which includes a large number of subassemblies or fillo-leafs arranged in a stack. The subassemblies which carry integrated circuits are bonded at one of their edges so they extend cantilever fashion into a fluid coolant. Each fillo-leaf includes a heat dissipating element and one is spaced from another by an ultraviolet light cured material which is in registry with a transparent edge portion of each fillo-leaf. The transparent edge portions are formed, on the wafer level, and used, on the wafer level to cure the U.V. curable material.Pairs of encoder lines which are used to provide a unique address extend from the edge of each fillo-leaf to an associated comparator. When stacks of fillo-leafs are diced from a stack of wafers, the pairs of encoder lines are encoded by shorting or not shorting the exposed ends of encoder lines which extend from the edge of each fillo-leaf.

    Abstract: The present invention relates generally to broadband, reflective circular polarizers and, more particularly, to single layer super broadband, reflective circular polarizers. The polarizers of the present invention are made from a film of material, like a polymer having a cholesteric order, in which a second liquid crystal material, like a nematic liquid crystal, is distributed in a non-linear fashion across the thickness of the film in a plurality of liquid crystal-rich and liquid crystal-depleted sites in the polymer. The resulting polarizers have band passes approaching 2000 nm and reflect circularly polarized light which is either left-handed or right-handed depending on the final spiral structure of the materials utilized. The material of the present invention is fabricated by mixing commercially available polymers having a cholesteric order, a second liquid crystal material and a photoinitiator at a temperature which maintains the mixture in a liquid state.
