Publication number: 20080314705Abstract: A magnetorheological (MR) piston includes an MR piston core, an MR piston end plate, a shim disc, and a flexible orifice disc. The end plate covers an end of the core to define a chamber and has a through passageway aligned with an MR-piston-core bypass passageway at the chamber. The shim disc and the orifice disc are positioned in the chamber. The orifice disc includes an orifice aligned with the bypass passageway at the chamber and includes an additional orifice. Under fluid pressure in a first direction the orifice disc lies substantially flat against one of the end and the MR piston end plate. Under fluid pressure in an opposite second direction the orifice disc is deflected by the presence of the shim disc to lift the additional orifice from the one of the end and the MR piston end plate.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 20, 2007Publication date: December 25, 2008Inventor: Saiman Lun

Publication number: 20080314707Abstract: A damper includes a rod guide assembly which is attached to an open end portion of a cylinder. The rod guide assembly is adapted to guide a piston rod and to seal damping fluid within the cylinder. The damper includes a compressible rebound bumper disposed between, and attached to one of, the rod guide assembly and a piston. The damper includes a rebound travel limiter. In a first expression, the limiter is adapted to limit the compression of the bumper when the limiter is in contact with the rod guide assembly and the piston. In a second expression, the limiter is in contact with the bumper and the one of the rod guide assembly and the piston, wherein the limiter has a modulus of elasticity which is greater than that of the bumper. Patent number: 6883649Abstract: A closing system for use with a magneto-rheological (MR) damper. The closing system provides lubrication for a piston rod without a need for periodic replenishment. According to an embodiment of the present invention, a lubrication chamber of the closing system utilizes a carrier fluid portion of MR fluid present in a fluid reservoir of the damper as lubricant for a piston rod guide and the piston rod. A seal retainer comprised of a porous material acts as a selective barrier to the micro-particles in the MR fluid in the fluid reservoir, allowing the MR carrier fluid portion to pass through the porous seal retainer to the lubrication chamber while restraining the micro-particles in the fluid reservoir. The seal retainer thus acts as a filter to segregate the abrasive particles of the MR fluid and allows the MR carrier fluid portion of the MR fluid to continuously replenish the lubrication chamber and lubrication passage to lubricate the piston rod guide and piston rod.Type: GrantFiled: March 21, 2003Date of Patent: April 26, 2005Assignee: Delphi Technologies, Inc.Inventor: Saiman Lun

Patent number: 6637556Abstract: Performance of a vehicle damper utilizing a Magneto-Rheological (MR) fluid is enhanced through use of a piston having grooves in the walls of a magnetic flux path portion of a fluid flow passage through the piston. The grooves result in a focusing and intensification of the magnetic flux emanating from the corners of the grooves, to thereby intensify the magnetic flux impressed across the fluid flow passage and cause a greater degree of change in viscosity of the MR fluid flowing through the passage than is achievable in prior MR dampers having smooth-walled fluid flow passages.Type: GrantFiled: August 5, 2002Date of Patent: October 28, 2003Assignee: Delphi Technologies, Inc.Inventor: Saiman Lun
