  • Publication number: 20240103306
Abstract: Suspensions of magneto-responsive Janus colloids form chains and undergo alignment under the influence of a magnetic field. When the magnetic field is aligned with a light path, light transmission through the sample increases as compared to randomly or orthogonally oriented chains. The emissivity response of this suspension is presented as a function of particle concentration and magnetic field strength. A variation of the Beer-Lambert model and ray-tracing simulations capture the behavior of the experimentally measured difference in intensity between magnetically activated and non-activated Brownian suspensions. Experiments demonstrate up to 25% contrast in transmission of visible light, which may be further optimized through materials selection. Similar experiments when these Janus particle chains are suspended in carbon tetrachloride, demonstrate an emissivity variation in the near infrared of ˜10%.

  • Patent number: 11257522
Abstract: Feature information characterize features of video clips may be obtained. A given video clip may be selected as a segment of a video edit. Other video clips may be iteratively selected as other segments of the video edit based on the feature information of the video clips and recommended feature information of the segments. Recommended feature information of a particular segment may be obtained by processing feature information of a previously selected video clip through a trained recurrent neural network. Video edit information defining the video edit may be generated. The video edit may include the selected video clips as the segments of the video edit.

  • Patent number: 10695985
Abstract: A method for inserting an insert into a hole in a composite material made from a plurality of carbon fiber layers suspended in a resin material includes lowering a temperature of the insert to a reduced temperature at which a coefficient of thermal expansion of a material of the insert causes the insert to contract to a first perimeter, inserting the insert at the reduced temperature into the hole, and permitting the temperature of the insert to increase from the reduced temperature to an operational temperature. At the operational temperature, the insert expands to a second perimeter so that the insert is retained within the composite material due to an interference between the insert and the composite material. The interference transfers a structural load from the insert to the composite material and results in damage to the composite material if the insert is dislodged at the operational temperature.
