Patent number: 11111801Abstract: A vane has an airfoil extending between a radially outer platform and a radially inner platform. At least one of the platforms has nominally radially thinner portions, and a pad defining a radially thicker portion. The pad has a radial thickness that is greater than a thickness of the nominal radially thinner portions. The pad surrounds an outer periphery of the airfoil on a side of the radially outer platform. The pad has a varying radial thickness. A mid-turbine frame and a gas turbine engine are also disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: May 21, 2014Date of Patent: September 7, 2021Assignee: Raytheon Technologies CorporationInventors: John T. Ols, Richard N. Allen, Steven D. Porter, Paul K. Sanchez, Sandra S. Pinero

Patent number: 9982548Abstract: An airfoil extends between radially inner and radially outer platforms. The airfoil extends between a leading edge and a trailing edge, and merges into facing surfaces of the radially inner and outer platforms. A variable fillet merges a facing surface of one of the radially inner and outer platforms into a wall of the airfoil. The variable fillet has a length extending away from a surface of the airfoil and a height extending away from the facing surface of at least one of the radially inner and outer platforms outwardly on to the airfoil. The variable fillet has a greater length at one of the leading edge and the trailing edge. A spaced portion has a shorter length at locations spaced from at least one of the leading and trailing edges. A mid-turbine frame and a gas turbine engine are also disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: June 25, 2014Date of Patent: May 29, 2018Assignee: United Technologies CorporationInventors: John T. Ols, Karl A. Mentz, Richard N. Allen, Steven D. Porter, Renee J. Jurek, Paul K. Sanchez, Sandra S. Pinero

Patent number: 8742279Abstract: A tool for forming a trench and a plurality of cooling holes within the trench includes a body, the body including a ridge portion extending along a first side of the tool. The ridge portion is operable to mate with a workpiece to form a trench on the workpiece. A plurality of electrodes extend from the ridge portion and are oriented to form a plurality of cooling holes within the trench on the workpiece.Type: GrantFiled: February 1, 2010Date of Patent: June 3, 2014Assignee: United Technologies CorporationInventors: Jesse Gannelli, Scott W. Gayman, Edward F. Pietraszkiewicz, Christopher B. Jelks, Sandra S. Pinero, Paul Thomas Rembish, Ryan Shepard Levy

Patent number: 8177507Abstract: A cooled airfoil includes a concave pressure wall extending radially from a base to a tip of the airfoil, a convex suction wall connected to the concave pressure wall at a leading edge and a trailing edge spaced axially from the leading edge, and cooling channels extending radially between the base and the tip of the airfoil between the concave pressure wall and the convex suction wall and configured to receive a cooling fluid supply through the base of the airfoil. The cooling channels include a leading edge channel, a trailing edge channel, a serpentine cooling circuit, and a dedicated up-pass channel. The serpentine cooling circuit includes a first up-pass channel forward of the trailing edge channel and configured to be in flow communication with a supply channel through the base of the airfoil, a down-pass channel forward of and in flow communication with the first up-pass channel, and a second up-pass channel forward of and in flow communication with the down-pass channel.Type: GrantFiled: May 14, 2008Date of Patent: May 15, 2012Assignee: United Technologies CorporationInventors: Edward F. Pietraszkiewicz, Sandra S. Pinero
