  • Publication number: 20080112283
Abstract: An apparatus, and related method, for recording data that includes a controller to generate control information required to record a main data. The control information including at least one information unit for a specific writing speed and recording layer. The information unit includes write strategy parameters for first write strategy type to be used for the writing speed and recording layer, the first write strategy type being one of an (n?1) write strategy type and an n/2 write strategy type, where n is a length of mark and each type represents a number of write pulse to form a corresponding mark. A writing/reading unit records the control information at a specific area of a recording medium, wherein the controller controls the writing/reading unit to record the control information and to record the main data on the recording layer using write strategy parameters for the first write strategy type included in the information unit, at the specific writing speed.

  • Patent number: 7359304
Abstract: After pre-coding bit data of address information to be recorded on an optical disc on the basis of at least 4 wobble units, wobble data pre-coded on at least 4 wobble units is modulated by a BPSK (Binary Phase Shift Keying) or ASK (Amplitude Shift Keying) method, and the modulated wobble data is alternately recorded on both sides of a land and/or groove of the optical disc. As a result, wobble signals, recorded on sides of signal tracks of a groove and a land, in consecutively repeated anti-phase, or having consecutively repeated different amplitudes, are avoided. There are no consecutively repeated zero-level sections in a push-pull signal, thereby minimizing performance degradation of a wobble PLL (Phase-Locked Loop) and a noise generated in a reproduction RF signal.

  • Patent number: 7352674
Abstract: Herein disclosed are an apparatus and method for encoding a wobble signal to be recorded on an optical disc, and an apparatus and method for decoding a wobble signal read from the optical disc. The encoding apparatus performs a minimum shift keying modulation operation for a wobble signal to be recorded as physical address information on a writable optical disc, by adjusting a first frequency f1 and second frequency f2 of the wobble signal with coherence. Therefore, a peak point of the wobble signal is formed at a point of time that the frequencies change. The decoding apparatus band pass filters an analog wobble signal read from the optical disc, converts the filtered wobble signal into a digital wobble signal, detects a peak point of the converted digital wobble signal, outputs a peak detection signal with a level transition at the detected peak point, and detects/outputs original wobble data on the basis of the outputted peak detection signal.

  • Patent number: 7260039
Abstract: A high-density multi-layer optical disc, a method for recording data thereon on a layer-by-layer basis, and a method for managing spare areas thereof. In a high-density multi-layer optical disc, having a plurality of recording layers formed thereon, such as a Blu-ray disc rewritable (BD-RE) dual layer, management information is recorded and managed appropriately to the multiple layers so that data can be recorded in a state where the recording layers are linked to each other or the recording layers are separated from each other. Inner and outer spare areas are separately assigned to each of the recording layers formed on the high-density multi-layer optical disc. The management information is recorded and managed appropriately to the multiple layers so that the data can be recorded in a state where the spare areas of the recording layers must be used together irrespective of the recording layers or used separately on the layer-by-layer basis.

  • Patent number: 7230901
Abstract: Disclosed are a method for recording address information on an optical recording medium, an optical recording medium including address information recorded thereon by the same method, and a method for detecting the address information recorded on the optical recording medium. The address information is recorded on the optical recording medium by such a procedure that physical address information of the optical recording medium is ASK (Amplitude Shift Keying)-modulated so as to convert the physical address information to a wobble signal, and then a wobble-shaped recording track is formed on the optical recording medium using the converted wobble signal, thereby recording the physical address information on the recording medium. Therefore, physical address information can be accurately decoded using a phase locked loop circuit and a wobble signal detecting circuit having a simple configuration, without reducing the data recording capacity of the optical recording medium.

  • Patent number: 7167524
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of inserting sync patterns of different lengths in modulated data, and a recording medium having sync patterns produced by the method. The sector sync and the frame sync pattern to be inserted in modulated data in accordance with the present invention must satisfy the given (d,k) constraints, have distinctive 0's run the modulated channel data can not have, and be as short as it can. In addition, the frame sync pattern is shorter than the sector sync pattern because the frame sync pattern is more frequently inserted than the sector one. Owing to the present sync patterns, the storage capacity reduction of a recording medium due to necessary insertion of sync patterns can be minimized under a given modulation condition.

  • Patent number: 7127662
Abstract: A method for recording address information on an optical recording medium, an optical recording medium including address information recorded thereon by the same method, and a method for detecting the address information recorded on the optical recording medium. Physical address information of the recordable optical recording medium is encoded for insertion as a synchronous code in a head of each sector in an error correction code block unit including a predetermined number of sectors. After the encoded physical address information is modulated into a wobble signal, a wobble-shaped groove is formed on the optical recording medium, using the wobble signal. This configuration allows sector-by-sector addressing operation without reducing the data recording capacity of the optical recording medium for recording real data.

  • Patent number: 6995698
Abstract: The present invention relates to method and apparatus of modulating a series of data words into (d,k) constrained sequence in order to record onto a recording medium. The present method generates, for each data word, a number of alternative sequences by combining mutually different digital words with the data word, calculates for each alternative sequence a digital sum value (DSV) and a penalty based on respective consecutive-zeros sections within the sequence and a joining consecutive “zeros” to a previously-selected sequence, and selects one alternative sequence for recording onto a recordable medium based on the calculated DSV and penalties. Owing to the present invention, DC component of sequences to be recorded onto a recording medium is suppressed and stabilization of a reproduction clock is improved through writing more edge information (i.e., “1”s).
