  • Patent number: 7035031
Abstract: A hard disk drive that includes a heater to heat an internal cavity of the drive. The disk drive may also have a temperature sensor to sense the temperature of the internal cavity, and a control circuit to control the heater and maintain the disk drive cavity, to be no less than a threshold temperature. The threshold temperature may correspond to a point where the heads of the drive undergo a significant degradation of performance. Maintaining the disk drive cavity temperature at or above the threshold temperature insures that the heads will not degrade due to temperature.

  • Patent number: 6912098
Abstract: A method for dynamic in-situ characterization of in-plane and out-plane thermal drift of a hard disk drive head suspension is provided. A first data track is written. Amplitude and amplitude modulation of the write data signal are measured and track center is determined. Data tracks are then written for a selected time period. Amplitude and amplitude modulation of the write data signal is measured and a new track center of a last data track is determined. Any difference between the track center of the first data track and the track center of the last data track represents in-plane drift. The amplitude and amplitude modulation of the two write data signals is compared and any difference between the measured values is proportional to out-plane drift.

  • Patent number: 6088199
Abstract: A magnetic disk for self-cleaning a disk drive recording head communicating with a surface of the magnetic disk. The magnetic disk contains an abrasive cleaning zone of a designated width located at an outer periphery on the surface of the magnetic disk. When a recording head periodically passes over and contacts the abrasive surface of the cleaning zone, particles or other contaminants adhered to the recording head are mechanically removed by the relative motion between the rotating disk and the recording head. The recording head may then be returned to a landing zone on the disk, if the cleaning takes place at the end of a stop cycle, or the recording head may be returned to a track in a data zone on the disk if the cleaning takes place during normal disk drive operations.

  • Patent number: 5822163
Abstract: A magnetic disk for a disk drive includes a landing zone with a first lubrication layer having a first thickness located at an inner periphery on a surface of the magnetic disk. A data zone with a second lubrication layer having a second thickness is located on the surface of the magnetic disk outwardly of the landing zone. The first lubrication layer is thicker than the second lubrication layer. The first lubrication layer is about 16 to about 22 angstroms (.ANG.), and the second lubrication layer is about 8 to about 11 angstroms (.ANG.).

  • Patent number: 5617336
Abstract: A method for checking top and end of tape for data recording and reproducing apparatus is disclosed. The method includes a first step for sensing a transparent tape section of a start portion of a tape wound about a tape take-up reel so as to sense the tape top. At a second step, a tape supply reel rotation period is detected and the detected supply reel rotation period is compared to a preset value. When the detected supply reel rotation period is not longer than the preset value, the tape end is checked at a predetermined period. However, when the detected supply reel rotation period is longer than the preset value, no tape end is checked. The method makes top-end checking time become optimal and saves power of the recording and reproducing apparatus, and reduces pulse noise generated in turning on or turning off the top-end checking LED.

  • Patent number: 5558736
Abstract: An electron cyclotron resonance apparatus capable of achieving a cryogenic cooling effect. By a radioactive motion property of radicals, a side wall etch of a photoresist can be avoided in fabrication of next generation integrated micropatterns. The apparatus also eliminates conflicting increase/decrease phenomenons occurring between the etch rate and the anisotropy and between the etch rate and the uniformity in general etching equipments. This achieves not only a desired vertical etch, but also a rapid etch rate. As a result, it is possible to eliminate factors of causing a complexity in the process using a conventional triple-layer photoresist (TLR) or multilayer photoresist (MTR) and degrading the yield and the productivity.
