  • Patent number: 10806144
Abstract: Disclosed herein are compositions comprising benzyl alcohol, one or more cationic antimicrobial agent, and one or more emollient, the combination of which results in persistent antimicrobial activity after application to the skin. The compositions optionally further comprise an organic acid and/or a zinc salt, such as zinc gluconate, as an anti-irritant.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 12, 2018
Date of Patent: October 20, 2020
Assignee: The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York
Inventors: Shanta M. Modak, Santoshkumar Hanmantrao Dongre
  • Publication number: 20190133126
Abstract: Disclosed herein are compositions useful for coating medical devices which have antimicrobial (anti-infective) qualities and which are simple to manufacture and cost-effective, and therefore suitable for global use, including in developing countries with economic constraints, and in a cost-conscious healthcare environment. In one embodiment, disclosed are formulations that include chlorhexidine (CHX), curcumin (CUR), for example, curcumin C3 complex, and a silver (Ag) salt. Other embodiments pertain to compositions that include CHX, Ag and a lubricating agent. The antimicrobial coatings made according to embodiments of the invention are easier to produce, have superior efficacy and devices coated with this composition show initial release of antimicrobials and prolonged prevention of bacterial adherence, compared to currently available alternatives, to significantly reduce device-related infection especially catheter associated urinary tract infection.

  • Publication number: 20180206505
Abstract: Disclosed are compositions comprising antimicrobially effective low concentrations of benzyl alcohol, one or more essential oil and one or more botanical extract. The compositions of the application may be used in personal care products including wound care products or in veterinary use. In certain embodiments, compositions are provided having antimicrobial active agents that are substantially or essentially entirely derived from natural sources, thereby allowing the user to avoid harsh and/or toxic chemicals. This may be particularly advantageous in products for use by or on children or pets or for use in households or other environments occupied by children or animals.

  • Patent number: 9981069
Abstract: The present invention relates to methods and compositions for rendering a surface resistant to bio-film formation by a combination of an alkanediol and an antimicrobial agent (and, optionally, an organic hydroxy acid). The invention provides for compositions which may be used to render surfaces bio-film resistant, articles having bio-film resistant surfaces, and methods for their preparation. The present invention may be advantageously applied to medical articles as well as articles used in non-medical contexts, such as child care or food preparation.

  • Patent number: 9497975
Abstract: Disclosed herein are preservative compositions comprising effective amounts of an alcohol, such as benzyl alcohol (“BA”), ethyl alcohol or phenyl ethanol, and cinnamon bark oil (“CB”), cinnamaldehyde (“CMA”), thyme oil, thymol, galangal oil, botanical extracts or combinations thereof, each of which are preferably obtained from natural sources. These preservatives have been observed to show broad spectrum anti microbial efficacy in both anionic and cationic formulations. In certain non-limiting embodiments, such compositions further comprise tetrahydrocurcuminoid (“THC”), phenyl ethanol and/or orange oil (“OR”) or rosemary oil (“RM”).
