  • Patent number: 5696417
Abstract: A drive member of the device is made of electrically conductive non-magnetic material, supported rotatably or movably straight and uniform in wall thickness and width. An outer magnetic member and an inner magnetic member are arranged respectively at the outer side and the inner side of the drive member which are orthogonal to the direction of movement thereof. At least one of the outer and inner magnetic member has at least three magnetic poles to provide closed magnetic circuits extending from the respective poles and penetrating the drive member and the magnetic members along a round path. The poles have a width less than that of the drive member and are arranged centrally around the drive member, so that the drive member has edge portions which are not opposed to the poles, at opposite sides thereof which are orthogonal to the direction of movement.

  • Patent number: 4575599
Abstract: A spiral arc circuit breaker is disclosed in which the arc created between breaker electrodes at the time of circuit breaking is confined inside a longitudinally-extending annular gap. Magnetic fluxes having directions perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the gap are created in the gap by a magnetic drive coil which surrounds the gap, a plurality of first yokes disposed outside of the gap, and a second yoke longitudinally disposed at the center of the circuit breaker. The arc created within the gap and the magnetic flux produced by the drive coil cross at right angles so that the magnetic flux can effectively act on the arc to produce spiraling of the arc within the gap. In contrast to conventional spiral arc circuit breakers, effective spiraling can be achieved even when the separation between the electrodes of the circuit breaker is large.

  • Patent number: 4567538
Abstract: An alternating current limiting apparatus is disclosed which normally forms first and second series circuits connected in parallel with each other between different kinds of power system lines. The first series circuit is resonated with a reactor and a capacitor at a line frequency to directly interconnect the power system lines. The second series circuit is composed of a capacitor or a reactor and two resistors. Between the interconnection of the reactor and the capacitor of the first series circuit and the interconnection of both resistors, a closing device is connected. Upon the occurrence of a fault of either of the power systems, the closing device is thereby actuated to form a parallel resonance circuit with the combination of the reactor or capacitor of the first series circuit and the capacitor or reactor of the second series circuit to limit current flowing between the power system lines.

  • Patent number: 4560848
Abstract: A circuit breaker comprising a cylindrical fixed contact, a cylindrical movable contact and a magnetic field producing means which renders the arc current spiral when created in a space between the fixed and movable contacts in the open-contact state, wherein the magnetic field producing means produces the magnetic field having a component which traverses the intercontacts space in the direction perpendicular to the axis of the space.

  • Patent number: 4523249
Abstract: An alternating current limiting apparatus is disclosed which includes first, second, and third circuit. The first circuit is formed of a winding means such as transformer, autotransformer, or reactor and a capacitor serially connected to the winding means and is connected between two different kinds of power systems. The second circuit is formed of a series combination of a closing device composed of, e.g. a gap, mechanical or semiconductor switch, or a non-linear resistive element, and a resistor. The second circuit is connected across the output terminals of the winding means. The third circuit is formed of a reactor and a second resistor serially connected to the reactor. The third circuit is connected in parallel with the first circuit. The closing device is normally kept in its open state to form a series resonance circuit of the transformer and the capacitor, thereby directly interconnecting the systems with null impedance therebetween.

  • Patent number: 4475018
Abstract: The present invention relates to a puffer type gas circuit breaker wherein, in order to efficiently extinguish an electric arc struck when a movable arc contact is disengaged from a stationary arc contact, self-extinction by an arc extinguishing fluid in a gas storage chamber is performed conjointly with forced extinction by an arc extinguishing fluid in a puffer chamber, in accordance with the movement of the movable arc contact.

  • Patent number: 4459447
Abstract: A self extinguishing type gas circuit breaker includes a body member having a first end connected to a terminal plate and a second end with a nozzle formed of electrical insulation material and defining a nozzle opening in communication with the interior of the body member. The interior of the body member includes an arcing chamber adjacent the nozzle and a gas storage chamber, such chambers being filled with an arc extinguishing gas. A stationary arc contact is electrcially connected to the terminal plate and is positioned within the body member at a location confronting the nozzle opening. A movable arc contact is mounted for movement through the nozzle opening between a circuit breaker closed position, whereat the movable arc contact extends through the nozzle into closed circuit contact with the stationary arc contact, and a circuit breaker open position, whereat the movable arc contact is spaced outwardly from the nozzle.
