    Abstract: Low acoustic solid wave attenuation structures are formed with an electroformed nickel mold, and are incorporated within acoustic ink emitters, between the focusing lens and surface of an ink layer. The structures have characteristics of low attenuation of acoustic waves to increase the efficiency of acoustic wave transmission within the acoustic ink emitter. Using the described structures, acoustic ink printers can accurately emit materials having high viscosity, including hot melt inks.

    Abstract: A method and device are provided in an acoustic ink printhead for masking temperature-induced artifacts by shifting the artifacts to a high spatial frequency beyond the visual acuity of humans. A cooling device is provided in the printhead for reducing the temperature of ink in a high speed acoustic ink printhead that ejects ink drops from an array of ink drop ejectors as the printhead moves along a longitudinal path. The cooling device includes first and second heat sinks formed on the printhead to develop first and second temperature gradients in the ink held within the printhead. The first and second temperature gradients are oppositely oriented along the face of the printhead so that the first and second sets of ink drops ejected onto a paper sheet adjacent the printhead produce rows of printed spots having a substantially uniform average spot size in a direction transverse the longitudinal path of the moving printhead.

    Abstract: An acoustic inkjet printhead utilizes a pulse width modulation to control droplet size or ejection velocity. An individual control pulse controls the duration and the time a RF signal is applied to each transducer. To modify the RF signal of each transducer, the pulse width of each control signal can be modified according to a predetermined correction data. The rising edge of the control data is delayed according to the correction data while the falling edge is kept the same.

    Abstract: A toner jet printer and method of use for printing images by manipulating individual toner particles using two-dimensional print cell arrays built by micro electro mechanical systems (MEMS) technologies. Toner particles are positioned by electrostatic forces within each print cell by either selective or non-selective filling. If selectively filled, each cell is then subjected to a mechanical force to eject the toner particles onto a paper substrate. If non-selectively filled, only those print cells corresponding to an intended image are addressed electronically to eject a toner particle from an addressed cell by mechanical forces controlled by micro actuator actuation. Single color or multiple color printing can be achieved using the same cell array.

    Abstract: Techniques for obtaining an ejection rate independent, spatial relationship between an acoustic focal area and the free surface of a liquid. Variations in the spatial relationship are reduced or eliminated by applying substantially the same acoustic energy to the liquid's free surface during periods when droplets are not ejected as when they are, but at power levels insufficient to eject a droplet. During ejection periods in which a droplet is not ejected, the acoustic energy is applied at a lower level, but for a longer time. Because it is more convenient to measure and control, the transducer drive voltage is used to control the acoustic energy applied to the liquid's free surface.

    Abstract: A system for scanning a room to find the location of target devices, and then locking onto them with stationary directed beams for two-way communication. In one embodiment, a base system in each room comprises an IR source/receiver combination plus an LCD display panel which covers the source/receiver and is addressed in such a way as to open up dynamic apertures through which IR radiation in a scanning mode can be directed toward any particular location in the room. When a device at that location senses that it is being irradiated by the base station, the targeted device responds by emitting a coded packet of IR pulses. This system takes advantage of the higher bandwidth communication that can be obtained with point-to-point communications, while still allowing for multiple devices at arbitrary locations in the same room.

    Abstract: Collaborative work on an interactive system is facilitated by accurately capturing and displaying information on an interactive system, wherein multiple persons may work together for supplying and receiving information with a single large area display. A large area electronic writing system is provided which employs a large area display screen, an image projection system, and an image receiving system including a light emitting pen. The display screen is designed with the imaging surface in front of the substrate, with a thin abrasion resistant layer protecting the imaging surface from the pen tip. The screen is held together with dowel pins pressed through the layers, and is curved to provide pressure for holding the layers together and mechanical rigidity against flexure during writing. The imaging surface disperses light from both the projection system and the light pen.

    Abstract: In a large area display system, multiple persons may work together with multiple input devices for supplying and receiving information in an interactive system with a single large area display. The large area display system comprises a screen wherein computer generated information is projected upon one side of the screen, and users interact with the computer from the opposite side of the the screen. Data coordinates for an input device corresponding to a pseudo image sensed by the receiving subsystem electronics are provided to the controlling computer. The input data coordinates from the pseudo image are normalized for variations due to frequency dependence and electronic drift. The normalized data coordinates are looked up in a calibration table to account for distortion in the pseudo image detection electronics. Screen coordinates corresponding to pixel locations on the large area screen are found by interpolation from the data From the calibration table.

    Abstract: The free ink surface levels of acoustic ink printers are controlled by cap structures that have substantially non-retroreflective aperture configurations. The non-retroreflective configurations of the apertures of these cap structures cause diffusive scattering or directional deflection of the reflected surface ripple waves, thereby significantly reducing the time that is required for the oscillatory perturbations, which are caused by reflection of the surface ripple waves that are generated during the droplet ejection process, to dissipate to a negligibly low amplitude in the critical local areas of the ejection sites. This, in turn, increases the droplet ejection rates at which printers having such cap structures can be operated asynchronously.

The substrate is submerged in the reservoir so that the substrate surface is parallel to the reservoir surface at a shallow predetermined depth. On the substrate surface around a center is a plurality of concentric, circular electrodes. A coupled oscillator excites the electrodes in a temporal relationship such that the capillary waves generated at the ink reservoir surface are reinforced so that droplets may be ejected from the reservoir at the center of the electrodes.
