Patent number: 8805957Abstract: A system having a distributed web site is described. The web site is distributed between a client, a server and a web server. The client stores a set of predefined applications that correspond to a part of the web site. The applications are formatted according to a first markup language. From the set of predefined applications, the client can generate queries. The server receives the queries and generates new, related queries. The new queries correspond to a second query protocol. The second query protocol is used by the web server. The web server generates responses to the new queries and sends these responses to the server. The responses are formatted according to a second markup language. These responses correspond to the second portion of the web site. The server then converts the responses into new responses that the client can use.Type: GrantFiled: February 3, 2012Date of Patent: August 12, 2014Assignee: Access Co., Ltd.Inventors: Jeffrey C. Hawkins, Joseph K. Sipher, Scott D. Lincke

Patent number: 8001485Abstract: A communications device provides a user with a sensory cue that informs the user of certain characteristics of a subsequent action that includes data communications. By informing the user of the data communication characteristics before the user initiates the data communication action, the invention appropriately sets user expectations regarding the data communication characteristics. For example, one embodiment of the invention is implemented in a portable communications device with a screen. For subsequent actions that include wireless communications, the portable communications device simultaneously displays a wireless link icon sensory cue next to a user interface graphic element. The user interface element is used to initiate the subsequent action. The user interface element can be an operating system object having an embedded link type icon.Type: GrantFiled: June 19, 2008Date of Patent: August 16, 2011Assignee: Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P.Inventors: Joseph K. Sipher, Scott D. Lincke, Ronald Marianetti, II

Patent number: 7266586Abstract: A method of presenting a unified view of two mailboxes, each mailbox associated with a client is described. The unified view allows the user to see all actions she/he performed on a message in one mailbox performed in all other unified mailboxes. One of the clients has both a high cost, e.g. wireless, communication channel and a low cost, e.g. synchronization, communication channel. When a message is received by a client from its respective mailbox without an identifier, an identifier is generated and a copy of the message is sent to the other mailboxes with the identifier. When the user performs actions on a message with a client, the identifier for the message and the action can be conveyed to the other clients in a message to the other mailboxes. The unified view can be selectably updated either over the high cost communication channel or the low cost communication channel. The presence of two communication channels enables the cost of performing the unification to be contained.Type: GrantFiled: November 4, 2005Date of Patent: September 4, 2007Assignee: Access Systems Americas, Inc.Inventors: Scott D. Lincke, Gregory M. Toto, Michael E. Golden

Patent number: 6993561Abstract: A unified view of mailboxes is presented. The unified view allows the user to see in one mailbox all actions performed in all mailboxes on a message. One of the clients of a mailbox has both a high cost and a low cost communication channel. When a message is received by a client from its respective mailbox without an identifier, an identifier is generated and a copy of the message is sent to the other mailboxes along with the identifier. When the user performs actions on a message on a client, the identifier for the message and the action is conveyed to the other clients in a message to the other mailboxes. The unified view can be selectably updated either over the high cost communication channel or the low cost communication channel. The presence of two communication channels enables management of the cost of performing the unification. The user can select options to control the unification process and the use of the high cost communication channel.Type: GrantFiled: January 10, 2002Date of Patent: January 31, 2006Assignee: PalmSource, Inc.Inventors: Scott D. Publication number: 20040223004Abstract: A hand-held computing device comprising a display and a processor is provided. The processor is configured to provide a graphical user interface on the display, the graphical user interface being switchable between a portrait mode and a landscape mode. An application running on the processor can generate a workspace to be displayed within the graphical user interface. In some embodiments, the workspace in the landscape mode is rotated 90° relative to the workspace in the portrait mode. The graphical user interface can also comprise a tool bar generated by an operating system running on the processor. In these embodiments, the tool bar location is switchable between left and right placement options. The landscape mode can also include left-hand-adjusted and right-hand adjusted configurations.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 5, 2004Publication date: November 11, 2004Inventors: Scott D. Patent number: 6397259Abstract: A wireless communications system, apparatus and methods provide packet minimized communications between a wireless client and a proxy server. The methods use novel data compression techniques to enable wireless communications devices to complete transactions by exchanging a minimum number of data packets. In many circumstances a transaction comprises a single request packet from the wireless client to the proxy server and a single response packet from the proxy server to the wireless client. The methods use a compact markup language, a compact transport protocol, a reliable message layer, hyperlink indices, server dependent forms, and a compressed user datagram protocol header. A compressed request message comprises a base document uniform resource locator followed by compressed data. The compressed data comprises field values and field indices corresponding to fields in a hyperlink document, and an indication of use of a hyperlink document.Type: GrantFiled: May 29, 1998Date of Patent: May 28, 2002Assignee: Palm, Inc.Inventors: Scott D.
