Patent number: 7496672Abstract: A method, apparatus, system, and computer program product for communicating using Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is provided. The method, apparatus, system and computer program product provide mechanisms by which simplified messages may be utilized by client applications such that the client applications need not maintain information pertaining to the routing of messages. The system includes a network interface and a SIP client manager that receives SIP messages through the network interface. The SIP client manager contains a SIP management module and an X-SIP client module. The SIP management module contains a SIP message modifier for modifying incoming messages and outgoing messages in accordance with context information or state information for a session associated with a SIP message, and the SIP management module also contains input/output controllers for receiving, sending, or forwarding SIP messages.Type: GrantFiled: November 20, 2003Date of Patent: February 24, 2009Assignee: Nortel Networks LimitedInventors: Scott L. Orton, William S. Lee, Mark Holden

Patent number: 7233980Abstract: A method and system for dynamic queuing utilizes a SIP messaging structure within a call center's architecture for interacting with a caller. The method and system can be used for ACD services developed for IP telephony using SIP as the signaling protocol. A SIP subscriber can also interact with an ACD system in the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) work space. In the latter case, a PSTN-to-IP gateway carries the bearer path and call level signaling between the two spaces, and corresponding Computer Telephony Integration (CTI) signaling links are used for linking the ACD specific signaling between the two spaces.Type: GrantFiled: December 12, 2000Date of Patent: June 19, 2007Assignee: Nortel Networks LimitedInventors: Mark J. Holden, Scott L. Orton

Patent number: 6771641Abstract: A system and method is provided for collecting and transporting DTMF digits between two network end points in a packet network in order to preserve the integrity of the DTMF digits. The system and method use a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), which is currently defined by the standard body of Internet Engineering Task Force. SIP applications utilize certain predetermined messages, such as an INFO message, and templates. DTMF digits can be collected and transported by using the SIP INFO messages. This works especially well for telephony applications which may require mid session signaling.Type: GrantFiled: December 10, 1999Date of Patent: August 3, 2004Assignee: Nortel Networks LimitedInventors: Patrick Sollee, Tahsin Choudhuri, Christopher Haun, Scott L. Orton, Stephen Whynot

Patent number: 6742042Abstract: A communication system includes a packet-based data network that is coupled to various network elements. The network elements include user systems and a service provider system. Each of the user systems may send requests to the service provider system to receive selected categories of information. In response, the service provider system (or alternatively another information provider) transmits the requested information to each subscribing user system, which then presents the information as a ticker. Messaging used for communicating the ticker information may be based on the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), including Subscribe and Notify messages or Info messages.Type: GrantFiled: June 28, 2000Date of Patent: May 25, 2004Assignee: Nortel Networks LimitedInventors: Mark J. Holden, Scott L. Orton, Julie R. Simons

Publication number: 20040059820Abstract: A communications system includes a packet-based data network to which are coupled various network elements. At least some of the network elements are capable of participating in real-time interactive communications sessions over the data network. Protocols that provide for such communications sessions include Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and the H.323 Recommendation. The data network includes subscriber systems that are capable of receiving advertising information in one or more messages communicated from a service provider system over the data network. The service provider system identifies the types of advertising information that may be of interest to one or more users at the subscriber systems. The service provider system is able to receive the advertising information from a data warehouse source, which may collect transaction information, such as retail transaction information, from retail sources.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 28, 2003Publication date: March 25, 2004Applicant: Nortel Networks LimitedInventors: Mark J. Patent number: 6438555Abstract: A method and apparatus in a data processing system for managing data elements from a data packet. The data packet are received including a plurality of data elements, wherein the plurality of data packets has a plurality of types. The plurality of data elements are placed into a first array, wherein the plurality of data elements are associated with a plurality of identifiers identifying a location of the plurality of data elements in the first data structure. The plurality of identifiers are stored in a plurality of data structures, wherein each data structure within the plurality of data structures stores identifiers of a same type.Type: GrantFiled: November 2, 1999Date of Patent: August 20, 2002Assignee: Nortel Networks LimitedInventor: Scott L.
