  • Patent number: 9266520
Abstract: The criteria used to determine whether to initiate an auto stop of an engine may be altered based on a number of previous auto stops of the engine, a total auto stop off time of the engine, or a total throughput of a battery. Altering the criteria may influence a frequency with which the engine is auto stopped.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 11, 2011
Date of Patent: February 23, 2016
    Assignee: Ford Global Technologies, LLC
Inventors: Kirk Pebley, Mark Douglas Malone, David Celinske, Scott R. Caudill
  • Patent number: 8702563
Abstract: A system and method for controlling a start-stop system for an engine in a vehicle includes automatically stopping the engine with a transmission gear lever of the vehicle in DRIVE. The engine is automatically restarted when the vehicle is shifted out of DRIVE and at least one condition is met. The at least one condition includes a final position of the gear lever. Automatic restarting of the engine is suppressed when the vehicle is shifted out of DRIVE and at least one other condition is met; the at least one other condition also including a final position of the gear lever.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 30, 2012
Date of Patent: April 22, 2014
    Assignee: Ford Global Technologies, LLC
Inventors: Sangeetha Sangameswaran, Mathew Alan Boesch, Scott R. Caudill, Mark Douglas Malone
  • Patent number: 8690731
Abstract: A system and method for controlling a start-stop system for an engine in a vehicle includes automatically stopping the engine when the vehicle is in NEUTRAL and automatically restarting the engine when the vehicle is shifted out of NEUTRAL and at least one condition is met. The at least one condition may include the direction of movement of a transmission gear lever. Automatic restarting of the engine is suppressed when the vehicle is shifted out of NEUTRAL and at least one other condition is met. The at least one other condition may also include the direction of movement of the transmission gear lever.

  • Publication number: 20130245925
Abstract: A vehicle includes an engine and a stop/start system that selectively auto stops and auto starts the engine, detects an auto stop inhibit condition that prevents the engine from being auto stopped, and in response, generates output based on the auto stop inhibit condition if the auto stop inhibit condition falls within a predetermined class of auto stop inhibit conditions. The vehicle also includes an interface that displays or plays the output to inform a driver of the vehicle about the detected auto stop inhibit condition.
