  • Patent number: 8352372
Abstract: A software conditional access system (CAS) for media services provided to a Media Distribution Device, such as a set top box (STB), is disclosed. The STB may be connected to a Media Delivery Service Provider via a broadband connection. Over the broadband connection, a CAS application may be downloaded to the STB, maintained and dynamically updated. Because the CAS is implemented by software on the STB, it is inexpensive to install, maintain and update. When a user desires to purchase media services through the STB, a request, with identifying information, is sent to the Media Delivery Service Provider via the broadband connection. The service provider cross-references the identifying information with a user's account to determine whether to allow the user to view the media service requested. If the service provider determines to allow the user to view the media service, the user's account (typically maintained by the service provider) is charged and a key is downloaded via the broadband connection to the STB.

  • Publication number: 20070255622
Abstract: Methods, systems, and products are disclosed for managing advertisements. An advertisement time slot is categorized as overrideable or non-overrideable. The overrideable advertisement time slot categorization allows an associated advertisement to be replaced with a different advertisement. The non-overrideable advertisement time slot may not allow replacement of the associated advertisement. When an advertiser requests to replace the advertisement, and when the advertisement time slot is categorized as overrideable, then the advertisement is replaced with the different advertisement.

  • Publication number: 20070250846
Abstract: Methods, systems, and products are disclosed for evaluating the performance of a viewer watching media programming. The media programming is received and includes at least one of a live media program and a recorded media program. Display is caused of the media programming and a cue. The cue prompts the viewer during presentation of the media programming to provide a response to the cue within a time period. Upon receiving the response to the cue within the time period, then the response is detected and a response time of the response is measured. The response time is a time between occurrence of the cue and receipt of the response. The viewer's performance is evaluated by comparing the response time to a reference response time.

  • Publication number: 20060253884
Abstract: Methods and systems provide clickstream captures at a remote component, such as a video control system of a television network, by receiving user commands generated by the viewer that are sent to the remote component concurrently relative to when they are generated by the viewer. The commands are captured and then information related to these commands is stored remotely from the premises of the viewer. Additionally, the user commands may be executed remotely such as at a video control system of a television network or alternatively may be executed at the premises of the viewer such as within a set top box. Information related to these user commands continues to be stored remotely from the premises of the viewer after the user commands have been executed such that the information related to these user commands can be processed as necessary and used for various purposes.

  • Publication number: 20060031882
Abstract: Systems, methods, and computer program products describe customizing the presentation of a content-access list based on subscriber-specific information, such as historic viewing preferences and related information. Preferences of a subscriber are received. A subscriber-specified time period is also received, with the time period specifying a time for which the subscriber wishes the preferences to be analyzed. A content database is queried for content related to the preference occurring within the time period. A first option list is received from the content database, wherein the first option list comprises content options related to the preference. The first option list is delivered to the subscriber.

  • Publication number: 20050283792
Abstract: Methods, systems, and products are disclosed for reporting a subscriber's content access selections to marketers. One such method stores when content is provided to a subscriber and when that content is displayed by the subscriber. The method then reports when the content is provided and when the content is viewed, thus describing the subscriber's content selections.

  • Publication number: 20050262540
Abstract: Exemplary embodiments provide an incentive for a viewer to watch and react to audio/video programming. For example, the viewer may be prompted during a program to provide an indicated response to an event within an indicated time period. Thereafter, the indicated response to the event may be detected, a response time of the indicated response to the event may be measured, viewer performance may be evaluated based upon the response time, and the incentive may be presented to the viewer based upon the response time. According to an exemplary embodiment, a viewer actuates a pushbutton key of a set-top box remote control unit and a signal that corresponds with the key is transmitted to and recorded by the set-top box. Other exemplary embodiments include a media delivery device for providing incentives, rewards, discounts, marketing data, and/or measurements to the viewer and a media delivery network.

  • Publication number: 20050235318
Abstract: An interactive media delivery system enables interactive media programming to a multimedia device and also tracks a subscriber's use of the multimedia device. For example, the device tracks events, such as a change in programming, a change in channel selection, and/or the subscriber's interaction with a particular interactive services application. Each event may be stored as an event record in a database, and one or more of the event records may be merged with content data to form event timelines of programming or other activity to the multimedia device over a selected time period. Further, timelines may be analyzed to generate ratings and other information about programming and may also be correlated with demographics data for marketing analysis.

  • Publication number: 20040250273
Abstract: A digital video broadcast (DVB) device decoder as part of a digital residential entertainment system (DRES) is disclosed. A media server, such as a broadband multimedia gateway (BMG), sends an entire transport layer, rather than a single program stream, over a Network Bus to a digital video broadcast (DVB) device decoder. The transport layer includes multiple program, data and information streams. For example, the transport layer may include multiple MPEG signals, such as MPEG-2 signals. The media server provides the DVB tuning function with integrated Personal Video Recording (PVR) functionality. The DVB device decoder provides decrypting, demultiplexing, decoding and digital-to-analog conversion. The complexity of the media server is minimized because it only has to decode a transport layer rather than decoding a single stream of data. The combination of entertainment video and data streams on the same transport is also optimized for the purpose of providing enhanced multimedia services.

  • Publication number: 20020141348
Abstract: A Media Delivery Diagnostic System can be deployed in response to a customer complaint or in an autonomous fashion. When a customer complains to a Media Delivery Service Provider, the complaint can be passed to a diagnostic service center. The diagnostic service center can initiate a query or command and transmit the query or command to a Media Distribution Device (MDD). The query or command can be processed by an intelligent diagnostic agent residing in the MDD. When the intelligent diagnostic agent receives the query or command, it can perform a diagnostic evaluation of the MDD and any other devices connected to the MDD. The intelligent diagnostic agent can transmit diagnostic data back to the diagnostic service center. The diagnostic data may be operational data and/or operational parameters related to the MDD, the identification of a problem with the MDD, or an indication that the intelligent diagnostic agent failed to identify a problem in be MDD.
