    Abstract: A bag having a built-in closure tab is defined. The closure tab is formed from the outer layer of the laminate which makes up the bag. When a user of the bag wishes to close the bag, the user folds or rolls the sides of the bag together down the side of the bag having the tab. The tab is partially separated from the rest of the outer layer of the laminate. A pressure sensitive adhesive disposed on the interior surface of the tab is used to affix the tab to the rolled down portion of the bag, preventing unwanted opening of the bag. The tab may be affixed and removed from the rolled down portion a number of times, thereby allowing the user to open and reseal the bag as many times as desired.

    Abstract: A paperboard tube is rendered resistant to liquid by coating portions or all of the tube with submicron-sized particles of inorganic material that are treated to be hydrophobic and/or oleophobic. The particles can be applied directly to the paperboard, lodging in surface pores such that the particles adhere to the paperboard. Alternatively, a light coating of a tacky binder or adhesive can first be applied to the paperboard and then the particles can be applied such that they adhere to the binder. Preferably, the particles have a large surface area per gram; in one embodiment, for instance, silica particles are employed having a surface area of about 90-130 m2/g. As a result, the particles create a surface on the paperboard that is highly repellant to liquid.

    Abstract: A laminate for gum packaging is defined. The laminate includes a metal layer, a polymer layer, a paper layer, and an electron beam cured coating. The laminate provides as good or better barrier properties as a conventional laminate for gum packaging. However, the laminate has “reacted-in” slip agents in the electron beam cured coating, thereby avoiding the common problems of slip agent migration. Further, the laminate of the invention is more economical to produce than is the conventional laminate.

    Abstract: A packaging material, a method of making such a material, and a package made from such material, are disclosed. A substrate comprises at least one sheet of plastic material. An energy-curable coating is applied to one side of the substrate, which will be the outside of the eventual package. The energy-curable coating is cured by exposing it to an electron beam or other appropriate energy. A cold-seal cohesive coating is applied to the other side of the substrate. The package is formed by pressing together portions of the inside surface of at least one sheet of the material having the cold-seal cohesive coating on them to form a seal. Preferably, the cold-seal cohesive coating is applied only to those portions of the material that are to form seams in the eventual package.

The primer coated face sheet can be thermoformed and bonded to a underlying plastic substrate panel.
