  • Publication number: 20140340437
Abstract: A display device uses a plurality of monitors to constitute a single image, achieves high contrast and, suppresses variations in luminance among the monitors. Each monitor is provided with an image analysis portion that finds a first feature quantity in a video display region corresponding to a region of an LED backlight, and a gradation control portion that determines a first luminance level for the corresponding LEDs region and calculates a luminance stretch quantity for stretching the first luminance levels uniformly. A microcomputer selects a minimum luminance stretch quantity from among the monitors and outputs the selected minimum luminance stretch quantity to the monitors. The gradation control portion for each monitor stretches the first luminance levels uniformly to determine a second luminance level on the basis of the minimum luminance stretch quantity acquired from the microcomputer.

  • Patent number: 8547404
Abstract: A liquid crystal display apparatus enables image display with optimum quality corresponding to the genre of an image to be displayed. The liquid crystal display apparatus controls the emission luminance of a backlight according to the APL of an image signal measured at an APL measuring portion 14. Upon emission luminance control, the display apparatus sets the follow performance of a change of the backlight emission luminance in following a change in a characteristic quantity of the image signal according to a genre so that the display image can be viewed without an odd feeling. Specifically, the APL of the image signal measured at the APL measuring portion 14 is put into a filter 15, and the rate of a change in the APL on the time axis is controlled through weighted averaging to control the follow performance of the emission luminance control on the backlight.

  • Patent number: 8232956
Abstract: A video with a display definition most suitable for the type of the video content to be displayed can be displayed. A liquid crystal display apparatus controls the luminance of the backlight light source according to the APL of the video signal measured by an APL measuring portion (16). The range of the video signal the APL of which is measured can be determined by, e.g., the luminance level of the video signal or by the genre information included in the inputted video signal or the OSD display information used when the liquid crystal apparatus (1) performs OSD display. The drawing shows the state that the upper and lower non-video areas are removed and an effective video area is determined. With this, the additional information displayed when the video signal is of a specific genre and the OSD-displayed additional information can be excluded, and the luminance of the backlight light source can be controlled to realize a display definition most suitable for the video signal.

  • Publication number: 20090174636
Abstract: It is possible to perform an optimal video expression in accordance with a change of a feature quantity of a video signal without lowering the display quality and reduce power consumption. As the video feature quantity, for example, APL is used. When the feature quantity is greater than a first predetermined value p1, as the feature quantity increases, the emission brightness of a light source is made smaller. Moreover, in the region where the feature quantity is smaller than the predetermined value p1, as the feature quantity decreases, the emission brightness of the light source is made smaller. Moreover, when the feature quantity is equal to the predetermined value p1, the emission brightness of the light source is made maximum. Moreover, when the feature quantity is greater than a second predetermined value p2, as the feature quantity increases, the ratio of decrease of the emission brightness of the light source is made greater.
