  • Patent number: 5606010
Abstract: The invention is an improved method for the preparation of poly-amine-quinone polymers using external oxidizing agents. The polymer produced has the general chemical formula: ##STR1## where each R is independently selected from the group of alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl, aryl, silyl, siloxyl and the alkyl, alkoxy, aryl, carboxyl, amino, sulfhydryl, sulfoxyl, sulfonyl substituted derivatives thereof and n is about 50-2,000, and the molecular weight of the polymer is about 10,000 to 1,000,000, preferably about 10,000 to 40,000. The polymer can be used in anticorrosion paints and coatings, such as automotive and marine paints and coatings, and can also be used as a curing agent for epoxy resins.

  • Patent number: 5284683
Abstract: A metal coated plastic and method of preparation thereof use a poly-diamine-quinone polymer as a binder, whereby a metal coating adheres to and is immobilized on a plastic surface. The poly-diamine-quinone includes the formula: ##STR1## wherein R is alkyl, monocyclic, cycloalkyl, monocyclic heterocyclic, aromatic, siloxyl, silyl and the alkyl, alkoxy, carboxyl and amino derivatives thereof, and n is about 70-700. The method of preparation includes coating a plastic substrate with a poly-diamine-quinone polymer, applying a metal coating to the poly-diamine-quinone polymer coated plastic, and curing the metal coated plastic. A further method is disclosed for imparting an electrical conductance to the metal coated plastic of the invention.

  • Patent number: 4981946
Abstract: A marine paint composition comprising a polymer of the formula: ##STR1## wherein R is alkyl, monocyclic cycloalkyl, monocyclic heterocyclic, aromatic, siloxy, silyl and the alkyl, alkoxy, carboxyl and amino substituted derivatives thereof, and n is about 70 to 700, and a suitable carrier.

  • Patent number: 4882413
Abstract: A novel class of polymers and processes used in their preparation are described. The polymers are produced by a reaction between polyfunctional amines and quinones. Some are infusible and intractable. Others are eminently suitable for the production of coatings, adhesives, insulators, etc. Some polymers, in solution in appropriate solvents adhere to metals, siliceous materials, composites with sufficient affinity to displace water. The polymers can be cured by heat or chemicals to an impervious and insoluble material that is not wetted by water.

  • Patent number: 4845278
Abstract: A new class of polymers and processes used in their preparation are described. These polymers are comprised of crosslinkable aramids, especially aramids that are based on synthetic aromatic amino acids. The aromatic amino acids suggested for this application are selected from the classes of amino benzoic acids, aminodiphenyl carboxylic acids, aminodiphenyl ether carboxylic acids, aminodiphenyl sulfide carboxylic acids, amino diphenyl sulfoxide--and sulfone carboxylic acids, aminonaphtalene carboxylic acids, amino anthracene carboxylic acids as well as their sulfonic acid counterparts, aminopyrimidine carboxylic acids and their crosslinkable and potentially crosslinkable derivatives. Crosslinkable or potentially crosslinkable moieties are selected from a group comprising amino-, nitro-, cyano-, halogene, acetylene, vinyl, acrylic moieties. Crosslinking can be achieved after linear polymers of high molecular weight are produced from low molecular weight prepolymers.

  • Patent number: 4822867
Abstract: A novel class of materials and processes used in their preparation are described. These materials are comprised of man-made polymers grafted onto protein backbone, specifically onto protein backbone, which has been selectively modified to be used as adhesives, coatings and construction materials. Man-made polymers can be selected from a group including condensation polymers such as phenolics, epoxides, polyamides, thiols, or addition polymers such as acrylics, vinyls and polyolefins. Grafting can be accomplished either stepwise or from already preformed polymers. Grafts can also be formed with more than one polymer either after the first graft is formed or simultaneously. Furthermore grafts can be formed onto a modified or unmodified protein whose backbone has been reduced to a polyamine.
