  • Patent number: 8928899
Abstract: An approach is provided for printing electronic documents that provides support for all types of printer models and PDL. A printer driver is configured to interact with Web print services that provide model-specific device capabilities and render PDL on behalf of the printer driver. A printer driver receives application data from an application program. The printer driver causes the application data to be transmitted to one or more Web print services that render the application data and generate print data in a format supported by a specified printing device. The printer driver receives the print data from the one or more Web print services and causes the print data to be transmitted to the specified printing device, wherein processing of the print data at the specified printing device causes a printed version of the electronic document to be generated.

  • Patent number: 8427675
Abstract: An approach is provided for automatically updating a printer driver for a printing device to reflect new features of the printing device or installing a printer driver for a newly available printing device. A client device sends a request to the printing device for a default print ticket. The client device also sends a request to the printing device for print capabilities data. Based on the print capabilities data and the default print ticket received from the printing device, a graphical user interface is generated, allowing a user to select, for a print job, print setting values for the one or more print settings supported by the printing device. Based on the print settings values selected by the user and the default print ticket, a print job ticket is generated for the print job and is sent to the printing device for processing.

  • Patent number: 8272027
Abstract: A routing computer is connected to one or more multi-function peripherals (MFPs) on a network. A routing manager located in the routing computer contains user information for users that operate one or more of the MFPs connected on the network. Based on a set of user preferences and or default settings, document data scanned by or received via facsimile for a particular user is sent from one of the MFPs to the routing computer. The routing manager then applies rights management and optional encryption to the destination document created from the document data and sends the destination document to a folder or to one or more individuals via electronic mail. As a result, rights management policy may be applied to newly created documents automatically and before the documents are accessible to users in network storage or by email.

  • Patent number: 8223363
Abstract: A universal print driver allows an application program to print to any printer available on a network without the user having to perform the configuration that is required in conventional printing arrangements. The universal print driver includes functionality for performing printing device discovery to determine printing devices that are available to process print data. The universal print driver allows users to manage options and settings for printing devices through the universal print driver. The universal print driver may also be configured with a “best fit” matching function that selects an available printing device to process print data that has characteristics that most closely match user-specified characteristics. The universal print driver generates a graphical user interface that allows users to view printing devices available to process print data and to select options and settings for printing devices.

  • Publication number: 20070263236
Abstract: A technique is provided for automatically discovering the values of attributes of print media disposed in input bins of a printing device. A driver process associated with the printing device queries a configuration file to retrieve information pertaining to the input bins. Based on the information, a request is generated and sent to the printing device. The query may include an identifier that identifies an attribute of a print medium currently disposed in an input bin of the printing device. The printing device receives the request and queries a database associated with the printing device. The printing device retrieves, from the database, a value associated with the identifier. The driver process receives the value from the printing device and updates a variable, corresponding to the attribute, with the value.

  • Publication number: 20070253010
Abstract: An approach is provided for managing printer driver settings. According to the approach, printer driver settings specified by a user for electronic data are maintained as a “print tag”. Print tags may be stored, either local to a client device or remotely to a client device, and later retrieved when electronic data is to be printed again. This allows printer driver settings to be maintained on a per electronic data, e.g., electronic document, basis and re-used any number of times. It also allows printer driver settings to be persistently maintained when the execution of application programs and print drivers is terminated or in the event of failures. Print tags may be shared among different users to allow multiple users to easily and conveniently use the same printer driver settings to print the same electronic data, without each user having to manually enter the printer driver settings.
