  • Patent number: 8971331
Abstract: A method, an apparatus, and a computer program for selecting one or more radio communication schemes for an end-to-end connection. Peers of the end-to-end connection negotiate (304), during establishment or operation of the end-to-end transport connection, about at least one transmission parameter of the end-to-end transport connection. Then, the peers select (306), amongst a plurality of wireless communication schemes supported by the wireless end-device, at least one wireless communication scheme capable of complying with the negotiated transmission parameters and, thus, available for use in the end-to-end transport connection.

  • Patent number: 6594495
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for load control and a radio system. In the invention a load result describing the load is cell-specifically formed. The load result is formed either by comparing a signal strength of desired signals and a combined total strength of interferences and the desired signals or by weighting a signal-to-interference ratio with a bandwidth or a data transmission rate. The load result is compared with a threshold value of the highest load level allowed of a cell. The data transmission rate in the cell is increased if the load result is smaller than the threshold value. The data transmission rate in the cell is reduced and the establishment of new connections is avoided if the load result exceeds the threshold value. In heavy load situations a signal-to-interference objective is also changed in order to balance the load result.

  • Patent number: 6539236
Abstract: A connection establishment method for establishing a random access type connection using a random access channel, which is used in a radio system having several subscriber terminal equipments (37 to 38) and base stations (33 to 36) where one or more transceiver units (40 to 47) operate, and in which system connection establishment between one of the subscriber terminal equipments (37 to 38) and the base station (33 to 36) is possible when the one subscriber terminal equip nt (37 to 38) is situated in the coverage area of one or more transceiver units (40 to 47) of the base station, where the one subscriber terminal equipment (3 to 38) evaluates the quality of the connections to be established. Starting from a condition in which no connection is established with the one subscriber terminal equipment, the one subscriber terminal equipment (37 to 38) forms a random access type connection to more than one base station transceiver unit (40 to 47) included in one or more base stations (33 to 38).

  • Patent number: 6317600
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for load control and a radio system. In the invention a load result describing the load is cell-specifically formed. The load result is formed either by comparing a signal strength of desired signals (23) and a combined total strength of interferences (13) and the desired signals (23) or by weighting a signal-to-interference ration with a bandwidth or a data transmission rate. The load result is compared with a threshold value of the highest load level allowed of a cell (1). The data transmission rate in the cell (1) is increased if the load result is smaller than the threshold value. The data transmission rate in the cell (1) is reduced and the establishment of new connections is avoided if the load result exceeds the threshold value. In heavy load situations a signal-to-interference objective is also changed in order to balance the load result.

  • Publication number: 20010023185
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for establishing a random access type connection and a subscriber terminal equipment (37 to 38) and a radio system operating in accordance with the method. The subscriber terminal equipment (37 to 38) establishes a connection to several base stations (33 to 36) with the method of the invention. The base stations (33 to 36) are selected before establishing the connection by deducing the quality of the connection by means of pilot signals and both uplink and downlink interferences. The subscriber terminal equipment (37 to 38) has a connection to several base stations (33 to 36) already at the initial stage of the connection.

  • Patent number: 5710974
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for improving the reliability of a handover and call establishment in a cellular radio system which comprises at least one base station in each cell, and a group of subscriber terminal equipments which communicate with one or more base stations. The base stations measure the total interference level of signals they have received from the terminal equipments, and transmit a pilot signal with a known transmit power. The terminal equipments measure the power levels of pilot signals received from different base stations. In the system at least some transceivers comprise circuitry for estimating, by means of the pilot signals, the path loss between the terminal equipment and the base stations.
