Patent number: 8767964Abstract: A system to improve communication security in cluster machine processing may include interconnected computers that can jointly process data. The system may also include a shared secret key used by each of the interconnected computers to encrypt, decrypt, and/or authenticate data being sent, or received, from one of the interconnected computers to another of the interconnected computers. The system may further include a new shared secret key used by each of the interconnected computers to encrypt, decrypt, and/or authenticate data being sent, or received, from one of the interconnected computers to another of the interconnected computers. In addition, the new shared secret key may coexist with the shared secret key without adversely affecting the joint processing of data performed by the plurality of interconnected computers.Type: GrantFiled: March 26, 2008Date of Patent: July 1, 2014Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Myung M. Bae, Christopher V. DeRobertis, Robert K. Gardner, Robert R. Gensler, Jr., John R Hare, Felipe Knop, Serban C. Maerean, Johannes Sayre, Hemant R. Suri

Publication number: 20130247069Abstract: In a parallel computer executing a parallel application, where the parallel computer includes a number of compute nodes, with each compute node including one or more computer processors, the parallel application including a number of processes, and one or more of the processes executing a barrier operation, creating a checkpoint of a parallel application includes: maintaining, by each computer processor, global barrier operation state information, the global barrier operation state information includes an aggregation of each process's barrier operation state information; invoking, for each process of the parallel application, a checkpoint handler; saving, by each process's checkpoint handler as part of a checkpoint for the parallel application, the process's barrier operation state information; and exiting, by each process, the checkpoint handler.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 15, 2012Publication date: September 19, 2013Applicant: INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATIONInventors: Wen Chen, Tsai-Yang Jea, William P. Patent number: 7885412Abstract: Generic session keys are pre-generated and stored in a pool of session keys for later use in communicating within a communications environment. The session keys that are stored in the pool are pre-encrypted with the private key of the entity storing those keys. To communicate between entities, a pre-encrypted session key is extracted from the pool and then further encrypted with the destination entity's public key to ensure data integrity and data confidentiality. The encrypted key is then forwarded to the destination entity and used during communications between the two entities.Type: GrantFiled: September 29, 2005Date of Patent: February 8, 2011Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Christopher V. DeRobertis, Robert R. Gensler, Jr., Serban C. Maerean

Publication number: 20090185685Abstract: In a distributed, multinode data processing environment, computationally more intense public key cryptography is used to establish computationally less challenging symmetric key cryptographic paths which are thus enabled for longer term communication interchanges and in particular for establishing a client's network identity.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 18, 2008Publication date: July 23, 2009Applicant: INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATIONInventors: Christopher V. Patent number: 7107446Abstract: The problem of providing and interacting with a number of different security mechanisms in a clustered data processing environment is solved by providing a Mechanism Abstract Layer which presents a consistent interface to applications running on the various nodes within the cluster. Mechanism Pluggable Modules are provided for each security mechanism that one wishes to employ. The Pluggable Modules provide a mechanism for mapping individualized security mechanism parameters through an interface with the Mechanism Abstract Layer. This provides a consistent interface for applications running on the nodes and it also avoids costly adaptations that would otherwise be necessary to accommodate new security mechanisms or variations in prior security mechanisms.Type: GrantFiled: August 30, 2001Date of Patent: September 12, 2006Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Robert R. Gensler, Jr., Serban C. Maerean, Clarence B. Parker, Jr., Hemant R. Suri
