Abstract: A portable messaging device for sending and receiving messages over a mobile communications system. In one embodiment, the device includes a touch pad for receiving handwritten symbols as input from a first user, a conversion module programmed to convert the input to an outgoing message composed of a series of characters in a pre-defined character set, a transmitter to transmit the outgoing message to a mobile communications system, and a receiver for receiving messages from the mobile communications system. The device can be adapted for use in existing mobile communications systems and does not require a keypad to transmit text messages to remote users. The device may be further adapted to facilitate financial transactions initiated by the user. For example, the user may use the device as a credit card in the purchase of goods or services from a merchant.
