  • Patent number: 9659029
Abstract: The embodiments deal with files that are already present in a storage when mounting the storage in a file system and files created after the mounting as different groups. (Metadata of) the files is classified. The files are each divided into metadata (index) and a file main body and are recorded on different storage areas, that is, an index partition (IP) and a data partition (DP), associated with each other. This file system is effective in a storage format in which a new file is merely written and an already written file is not updated or deleted (for example, a tape medium used in the LTFS). The embodiments implement a WORM file system by rejecting a request to update or delete a file that is present at mounting as a WORM file and permitting update or deletion of a file that is created after mounting until the storage is unmounted.

  • Publication number: 20170139785
Abstract: Rolling back data on tape in a file system is provided. A management tape is prepared. The management tape has only index files recorded thereon. The index files contain information about start positions and lengths of corresponding data files recorded on normal tapes. The index files further contain identification information for the normal tapes. A first index file of the management tape is read. The first index file is related to a data file to be rolled back. The first index file is read out from the management tape mounted on a first tape drive. The data file to be rolled back is read out of a first normal tape. The first normal tape is identified based on information in the first index file. The first normal tape is mounted on a second tape drive.

  • Publication number: 20170125053
Abstract: According to one embodiment, a system for processing data includes a controller configured to determine whether a position error signal (PES) is invalid while reading data from a magnetic medium using at least one data channel. The controller is also configured to determine whether a PES value is above a first predetermined threshold in response to a determination that the PES is valid. Moreover, the controller is configured to inject error bits into a data stream in place of corresponding bits of decoded data in response to a determination that the PES is invalid and in response to a determination that the PES value is above the first predetermined threshold. Other systems and methods for processing data are described in accordance with more embodiments.

  • Patent number: 9608670
Abstract: According to one embodiment, a method for processing data includes determining whether a PES is invalid while reading data from a magnetic medium using at least one data channel, determining whether a PES value is above a first predetermined threshold when the PES is valid, injecting error bits into a data stream in place of corresponding bits of decoded data when the PES is invalid and/or the PES value is above the first predetermined threshold, decoding the data using a run-length limited (RLL) decoder to produce the decoded data based on the data from the magnetic medium, and outputting the data stream. Other methods, systems, and tape drives for processing data using error injection are described in more embodiments.

  • Patent number: 9471255
Abstract: A mechanism is provided for tape writing of small transactions. A first file is written as a plurality of fixed-length data sets (DS), the DS number of the final DS in the plurality of DS is stored in memory as #N(DS#N) and the WP number as #M(WP#M), and the final first file and the second file in the DS following the final DS(DS#N, WP#M) containing the first file are packed and written in sequential DS units, and are stored as DS#N, DS#N+1, etc. and WP#M+1 in sequential order in DS containing the second file. The remaining first, second, or third file is packed and DS#N with WP#M is overwritten as DS#N with WP#M+2, and the remaining #N in the DS numbers of the second file and the third file in the subsequent DS are written as DS#N+1, N+2, etc. with WP#M+2, and the DS#N, #N+1, #N+2, etc. with WP#M+2 are stored.

  • Patent number: 9262081
Abstract: A storage system includes a plurality of tape drives connected to a host, and a buffer configured to temporarily hold data read from the drives. A mechanism loads a plurality of media on which a file has been written to the plurality of drives so as to mount the plurality of media in the plurality of drives and divides the file into a plurality of data portions in an order. The mechanism determines a medium that takes the shortest time to move from a current position of a read head of a corresponding drive to a beginning position of the file and one or more media from which following data portions of the beginning data portion are to be read. The mechanism executes reading of the following data portions from the next media and temporarily holding of the read following data portions in the buffer of the storage system while reading the beginning data portion of the file from the first medium to the host.

  • Patent number: 9247193
Abstract: In one embodiment, a method includes receiving from the host a video special mode for reading video data, and sequentially reading the records included in data sets from the tape medium into segments of a buffer. When there is a C2 error during reading of the data sets, a predetermined error recovery process is skipped in accordance with the video special mode. When management information (DSIT) for the data set having the C2 error is available for reading, sending of the record(s) included in the data set having the C2 error to the host is skipped. For the data set having the C2 error, the number of records to be skipped included in the data set having the C2 error based on and from the DSIT is obtained and indicated to the host.

  • Patent number: 9053745
Abstract: Mechanisms for writing a file on a tape medium in a manner that enables high-speed reading are provided. A predetermined format is applied to the medium that divides the medium into a first region of a predetermined length in a longitudinal direction from a region of the medium, and a second region that extends from an end of the first region to a terminal region of the medium in a longitudinal direction and that has a predetermined width with respect to a width of the medium in a transverse direction. Writing a top data portion of a predetermined data amount of the data of the file in the first region and writing data of the file in the second region are performed.

  • Publication number: 20150120740
