  • Patent number: 5217497
Abstract: An implant (10) for use in fixing one segment of a spinal column to another segment thereof by means of at least one rod member, comprises a screw member (11) for insertion in the pedicle of a segment of a spinal column and having an enlarged diameter head (13) with an open ended transverse slot (16) to receive a fixing rod member (20), and clamp means having a screw threaded connection with the head (13) of the screw member (11) and having a clamping portion fitting around the outside of the head (13) of the screw member (11) for engaging a fixing rod member (20) inserted in the transverse slot (16) of the screw member (11) and clamping it therein. The clamp means comprises a collar (14) around a reduced diameter portion (19) of the head (13) and a clamping screw (15) having a threaded shank (18) inserted in a threaded counterbore (17) in the head (13) and having a flanged head (22) for engagement with the collar (14).

  • Patent number: 5092868
Abstract: A tie member for insertion through a segment of a spinal column for clamping that segment to a link or frame embracing that segment comprises an endless loop of wire flattened to form two strands substantially parallel and contiguous with one another at least in their end regions in which one strand runs into the other in an end loop. Such a tie member of finite length with the end loops can be readily inserted through a segment of a spinal column, manipulated into and retained in a desired position and have its ends twisted together for clamping. The endless loops obviates any sharp ends that could accidentally cause damage to the spinal column. Ancilliary instruments for use with the tie members include a keeper with arms defining an end recess across which extends a pin on which the tie member end loops can be received, and a twister with a crank handle and a tapered T-shaped groove to receive a keeper, and a puller having a T-shaped handle and a hook compatible with the tie member end loops.

  • Patent number: 4998936
Abstract: A crosspiece for use in forming a link or frame to embrace a group of segments of a spinal column in the treatment of spinal disorders has a pair of tubular side members joined by a spacing member intermediate their ends and the axes of the tubular side members and the axis of the spacing member are coplanar. A pair of crosspieces can be combined with a pair of rods to form a link or frame which will cater for spinal growth. The rod members can be plain rods or L-shaped rods or ratchet rods or combinations thereof. The bores in the tubular through bores are closed ended.
