  • Publication number: 20090004479
Abstract: A coated veneered article has at least one visible wood veneer layer coated with a multilayer finishing system comprising a coating layer nearest the veneer layer comprising a cationically polymerized moiety or moiety polymerized via cationic and free radical cure mechanisms, and an outermost coating layer comprising a free radically polymerized moiety. The article exhibits less veneer checking than a veneered article coated only with free radically polymerized coating layers.

  • Publication number: 20080041003
Abstract: Engineered wood product edges are protected by applying a two part edge sealing composition to at least one edge surface. The two part edge sealing composition can improve holdout, hide, and water resistance. An edge sealing system and substrates coated with the sealing system are provided.

  • Publication number: 20070259188
Abstract: A coated article which includes a cement fiberboard substrate and a radiation-curable coating system applied to the substrate. The coating system includes an aqueous dispersion of water-dispersible polymer particles, one or more olefinic compounds and water, and may be provided in the form of one or more coating compositions that may be applied in one or more layers, wherein each of the coating compositions is preferably an aqueous composition, or can be mixed with another composition (e.g., on the substrate) to form an aqueous composition.

  • Publication number: 20060135686
Abstract: An aqueous coating composition containing (i) a polymer having one or more acetoacetyl-functional groups; and (ii) an acid-functional polymer, which may be the same as or distinct from the polymer comprising acetoacetyl-functional groups, wherein a nitrogen-free base has been used to neutralize or partially neutralize the acid-functionality on the polymer.

  • Publication number: 20060122330
Abstract: The present invention provides a crosslinkable waterborne coating composition useful for providing protective coating to wood and other substrates. The coating composition includes a vinyl addition latex polymer having a first crosslinkable functional group and a polyurethane dispersion having a second crosslinkable functional end group. The coating composition is preferably essentially formaldehyde free.

  • Publication number: 20060029825
Abstract: A veneered wood product is made using a multilayer finishing system wherein at least one of the subsurface layers comprises a UV cured cationically polymerized moiety. Coatings based on UV curable cationically polymerizable moieties appear to be less sensitive to UV overexposure and more adherent to wood fibers than corresponding coatings based on UV curable free radically polymerizable moieties. The multilayer wood veneer finishing system can provide improved intercoat adhesion or improved veneer check resistance, especially under factory conditions.
