  • Patent number: 5631400
Abstract: A process is provided for carbonylation of ethylenic unsaturation comprising the steps of: providing a catalyst system comprising a) a Group VIII metal compound, b) an organic phosphine, and c) and acid; and contacting acetylene, the catalyst system, carbon monoxide, hydrogen, and a nucleophilic compound under conditions effective to carbonylate the acetylene. The presents of hydrogen unexpectedly improves the yield of the desired product (i.e., acrylic acid or the ester thereof).
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 19, 1995
Date of Patent: May 20, 1997
    Assignee: Shell Oil Company
Inventors: Sharon M. Beshouri, Tonya L. Garcia
  • Patent number: 5362762
Abstract: Stable high internal phase water-in-oil emulsions containing polymerizable vinyl monomers, crosslinking monomers and initiators, useful in preparing low density porous crosslinked polymeric foams, are obtained by using a surfactant system containing (a) one or more sorbitan fatty acid ester or saccharide fatty acid ester and (b) a glycerol monofatty acid ester. A higher water to oil ratio water-in-oil emulsions can be formed with the same formulation by using the glycerol monofatty acid ester cosurfactant.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 11, 1994
Date of Patent: November 8, 1994
    Assignee: Shell Oil Company
    Inventor: Sharon M. Beshouri
  • Patent number: 5349046
Abstract: A method is disclosed for making a molded article of manufacture of polymerized .beta.-lactone which method involves injecting into a mold at least one .beta.-lactone monomer and at least one nucleophilic initiator, substantially polymerizing the .beta.-lactone in the mold and removing the resultant polymerized article from the mold.
    Type: Grant

  • Patent number: 5306831
Abstract: Polyol impurities in a sorbitan ester mixture is removed by treating a polyol-containing sorbitan ester dissolved in a solution containing a hydrocarbon and a polar organic solvent with an aqueous metal halide salt solution.
    Type: Grant

  • Patent number: 5200433
Abstract: The present disclosure is directed to using a blend of sorbitan esters as a surfactant to produce a stable water-in-oil high internal phase emulsion in the preparation of a low density porous crosslinked polymeric material. This process produces low density, high capacity, porous, crosslinked, polymeric materials with improved absorption capacity and foam properties.
